Why is this relegated to just religion? We hear proselytizing everyday. Aren't politicians proselytizing everyday? Look at the political campaigns. "Somehow others do not have the mental and moral capability of figuring that out." Sounds just like politicians!

Atheism is just as much of a religion as Christianity, it is a set of beliefs some will argue for. On the other hand I dont want ideas and beliefs to be discussed as absolutes. I cannot prove that there is a supreme being just as much as a person cannot prove there isnt.

    Did I say it was?

If atheism is a religion, then not collecting stamps is a hobby.

I didn't win the $550 million Powerball last month.

What am I going to do with all this damn money? I bought a 1983 Hyundai, got a nice jacket from the Salvation Army, added HBO to my cable, and I STILL have money in my account. This is getting ridiculous!

It appears that some colleges like Harvard and Stanford have Atheist chaplains. So I guess there's a recognized belief system just like Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc..

Nonsense. Did you read the article?

Many Christians seem to believe that atheism is a religion, but no one with an accurate understanding of both concepts would make such a mistake. Atheism lacks every one of the characteristics of religion. At most, atheism doesn't explicitly exclude most of them, but the same can be said for almost anything. Thus, it's not possible to call atheism a religion. They are completely different categories: atheism is the absence of one particular belief while religion is a complex web of traditions and beliefs.

The Atheist Chaplin is characterized as a professional Atheist. What makes a person a professional Atheist? Is this person the loudest most red-faced complainer of all things religion? I know most priests, pastors, and the like are required have a degree and/or masters degree. Is there an Atheist Bible of sorts? What does an Atheist study to become a professional? Do Atheists pray to anything like a periodic table? I'm serious with these questions. I have no idea and I'm curious. My experience with religious and atheist-types is that most stay on the sidelines and do their own thing without interrupting my day. But every now and then there are the fanatics that like to shout from the mountain tops. I can understand why atheists become fed-up with the religious nuts always quoting scripture and throwing fake $20 bills on the ground. But after a while the preaching and whining becomes annoying.

    Just curious...

    Clay,

It does seem a little silly, doesn't it? But absolutely nothing wrong with asking the question. I've always disliked those that shout from the mountain top, "My way or the highway!", religious types. I'm open......to simply listen.

I guess that came from my upbringing as a Christian Scientist. It wasn't forced down my throat, our mom simply fired up the VW bus every Sunday and we were "expected" to pile in. There were actually a few times when I wanted to join my friends at Big Surf in Tempe, AZ, and I told my Mom that. "Okay.", was all she said. That's what I mean by not being forced. Or the times I would load up my dirt bike on my trailer towed behind the VW and go riding with my Sunday School teacher after church.

Okay, that's not an atheist organization, so my apologies for slightly changing the subject, but it IS an interesting "something" to read about. If you want to learn about a different take on religion. I "dropped out" when I was around 12, if you can call it that, as they never consider someone stopping attending their services as a "drop out". In their eyes, I'm not a heathen. No judging of yours truly.

It's actually pretty cool. I think of Christian Science as the Western version of Buddhism. Accepting of every other view, and judging no one. Now that's cool. It used to drive my siblings and I crazy with the constant smiles plastered on their faces. "STOP being so happy!", we'd laugh. It takes some getting used to.......but we never had to line up for shots with all the rest of the kids in school. Yeah.....the government recognized the CS beliefs. Not sure I ever did. I will say that we were never sick. Maybe it was natural antibodies built up in our systems. Who knows?

But again, one very cool "denomination". I'm glad I was introduced to it. It taught me tolerance. If that is all it taught me, that was enough, in my mind. Can't remember which denomination it was an off-shoot of, but you can Google it. Hey, their newspaper is well respected!

My Dad hated it, but he was intolerant of a lot. His loss. If there is one person in this group that can understand the openness of CS, it's probably Ron Conard, because like me, he's enjoyed experiencing many different beliefs. No idea why CS popped into my mind.....it just did. Hey, if nothing else you can get a good laugh at their outlook, if you find it "amusing", or maybe think to yourself, "Okay.....that's pretty cool." Wow....how many times have I typed "cool"?

You know, my Mom died at 89, and she never so much as took an aspirin in her life, but she did drink coffee so strong that it would clean the stains off a concrete driveway. I always had to water it down, and she just laughed. Maybe she was in pain a lot....I'll never know. But she was always smiling. I'll never forget that. For those of you that are saying, "This has NOTHING to do with atheism!", you're probably right, and I apologize. But if you have the time, spend just a few minutes reading up on it. Interesting, to say the least.

Absolute tolerance, of everyone. That's what I took away from it. And that's good, right?

    Sorry about the length......

    Cheers,

    Jeff

I am honored that you think enough of me to share your thoughts. I say [u">me[/u"> cause I felt as if you were speaking directly to me. I'm sure everyone else probably felt the same way. Such a powerful and inspiring story. I could have done without the Google-thing though. You must have been possessed by Wahlin at that brief moment in time. Think about that for a second. Wahlin was in you. How does that make you feel? I'm creeped out by it. I can only imagine how you're feeling right about now. But I digress.

From what I understand, you Christian Science-types believe that things take care of themselves, like illness. No medicine. No doctors. That sorta thing. If things take care of themselves, then do you brush your teeth? Or even take a bath? Do those things take care of themselves too or do you just pray the stink away? Interesting. Very interesting.

Breaking the Law of Thermodynamics is punishable by death, isn't it? I think something Christian like burning at the stake or along those lines. You know...something really bloody that will put the fear of dog into others.

    Jeff

Jeff, I am not sure about what we can see in the afterlife but if your Mom could read this I'm pretty sure she would be proud of your tolerance.

I think it is through tolerance and human dignity that humans set themselves apart. In America we talk tolerance in our Constitution and Declaration of Independence, but rarely do we actually live it. Man's inhumanity is well documented in our own history as well as the history of the world. Yes there were probably worse examples than the USA, but probably not for Native Americans or African Slaves. There is really no way to right those wrongs, but with the promise to be a more tolerant society we can prevent them in the future.

I am a very religious man but I rarely share that part of my life here on the forums. It is a deeply personal journey. When people inquire I am happy to share but I find they inquire a lot more when they are prompted out of their own curiosity. Atheism requires faith as does belief in a deity. Tolerance requires no faith only tolerance, yet from [u">my[/u"> perspective it is a better measure of a man's soul.

"I am not an atheist because I am mad at your god.
I am not an atheist because I love sin.
I am not an atheist because I don't want to answer to authority.

I am an atheist because I sought the truth about reality. I have accepted nature and my place in the Universe. I will live and I will die. I wish to leave this world knowing I did my best. I hope our descendants inherit a world that can sustain them.

I do not believe religion will bring peace to mankind. At the very core it seeks the end of the world. Judgment day. The end of the road for our species. And against those ideas I will fight. For my child as well as yours."

It amazing to me how much time non-believers spend thinking about their choice, unless of course someone is actively trying to convert you. At the very least you should understand that Christianity, at least promises everlasting life, not the end of our species. Although I would argue that Christianity is not a religious denomination. I am not sure what the "-ism"s promise.
