Gary, thank you for your reply, and I appreciate your professionalism. I too have seen many struggle with the work / life balance. I don't have kids, have a very solid relationship with my wife, and enough free time to play when I want(my hobbies don't require sunshine). The difference between your post and the aforementioned is delivery. I would never question why someone may work more or less, I just accept the fact that we all operate differently.

Longs hours, 60+ come with the job for various reasons. Projects, aerification, tournaments, etc. I look back on my career and see that the majority of my long hour days were when I was a newbee super. I wasn't as efficient with time management, sometimes took the long road because I didn't know the respective "work smarter not harder" methods and of course I was trying to make a statement. A wise man once told me "deliver what is paid for". This doesn't mean not to go above and beyond. Sometimes it's required. But to make above and beyond a constant is to fool yourself and the membership. You fool the membership in believing they are providing the golf course with enough resources when in actuality they are not. You fool yourself because you cannot possibly sustain such long hours over the long run. This will ultimately result in burnout or eventually not meeting the expectations, which you created, of the membership.

Curtis Nickerson said: And for those of you working 60-80 hrs a week, what are you doing, what tasks require that time? (seriously Id like to know what a "day in the life" of an 80hr a week supt looks like) do you not have a staff you are confident in, is their not enough staff, does your club have unrealistic expectations, is your assistant too weak to handle the load in your absence, do you not have an assistant? IMO if you're working that many hours to get the job done "you're doing it wrong"....

I cant say that I'm a 80hr a week Supt, but I'm not a 40hr a week Supt. Each club has different desires and demands. They will find someone to work the hours and time and they will pay for that. At this point in my career, I rarely ask something out of the staff and Assistants that I wouldn't do, time/hours included. I open up and lock the gates with them. When I was an Assistant, I certainly respected my bosses for doing the same. When the Supt is there 40hrs or 80hrs, everything still falls as their responsibility.
Lastly, I enjoy being on the course, running the dog and being outside. It's not work. It's a labor of love.

As I was sitting on the sofa last night chatting with a colleague, doing some product research and reading this forum, it occurred to me (after my lovely wife pointed out) that I too probably "work" that many hours in an average week. I guess I really had not considered the "after hours work" I do as actually working. I respond to membership queries and emails, draft entries for the blog, I'm always searching the net for new technology and ways to better myself and my club, I follow a lot of sharp guys on twitter and I am always reading any blogs I can find. I guess its similar to what Tony said, its my passion and a labor of love. I guess I have never considered the time i put in away from the course as working.

So with that said,it appears that I am "doing it wrong" and working too many hours. And don't get me wrong, I am not disputing that I am an anus as Steve and Jamie so kindly pointed out, but I take exception to the arrogant part...

And Tony, who you trying to fool saying "you lock and unlock the gates" we all know you have automatic electric gates with facial identification software to allow access! LOL

"makes you sound like" and "you are an" are two different things. Apologies if it didn't read that way.

I thought all Superintendents were Anus's, isn't that what we get paid for? If not I may be doing something wrong.

On a side note, I ran into an exworker of mine yesterday and the cenima. While he was a great worker he found the cold weather not to his liking and moved on under great terms. he is now managing a 20 screen cenima and aask me to call him next time I wanted to see a show! Its always great to see workers move on and make something out of themselves other then druggies!
