Hi all.  I am putting together a weed control plan for this upcoming season.  Last year  I was able to get great control of crabgrass with granular Dimension pre-emerge.  We then cleaned up the little bit that popped up with some Solitaire or Acclaim applications.  For goose, we just used the Dimension as Pre-emerge even though its not great on goosegrass.  Post-emerge we started with 7oz/A apps of Acclaim with every fairway spray.  This did not work so well. We then switched to 0.25oz./acre of pylex every fairway spray.  This worked great but my goodness it was ugly as sin for three weeks with the bleached white look.  Last year was my first year as a superintendent and before the company I work for took over they did not do much for weed control so goosegrass was prevalent.

With all that being said, this year I want to do half rate of dimension granular with my fert for the first app.  Then I will come back with Dimension 2EW at half rate to complete the application.  A few weeks after that I want to spread 5-0-15 with 1% Ronstar at 200lbs/Acre on my three or four worst fairways in regards to goosegrass.  This will be followed with post-emerge applications similiar to last year.

My fairways are mainly perennial ryegrass/poa annua with some areas of creeping bent.  My ronstar application will get me 2lbs a.i/acre, which is half the Ronstar G rate.  I think that any discoloration to my bentgrass will be minimal and the benefit of getting goose under control outweighs the risk.  What do you think?  Is the Ronstar a bad idea or could this be more effective in any way?  Thanks!

    Hello!
I think your program looks solid. Ronstar is turning into the only way to go for preventative Goosegrass control in our area. That in mind, it can be a little weak on crab by itself, but you still may be able to skimp a little on the second half rate of dimension. See how the numbers and quantities work out.

For pylex, I would recommend going at 0.1 oz/acre. It will still be effective if started before things get out of hand and in the tank every week without bleaching the bent. If any of the goose does get too big for the low rates of pylex, go with SpeedZone. It is a different MOA than pylex and will not bleach the bent.

Hope that helps. Catch up soon!

Not sure if it will help your situation but stick with your preventative program and consider using weedwands with round-up (or another non-selective product) to selectively take it out. You wont have all the discoloration of the fairways/roughs that you can get with the post apps. Yes it will take time, but just treat it as a job like divot or ball-mark repairs and slowly plug away. You'll be surprised what you can achieve with one worker for half a day a week over a period of time. Not sure if there would be any financial saving either way with cost of labour vs chemical?
