I have never had a problem with a person who wants to believe they are a descendant of a Ape, Monkey, Bird or Fish, that is their right. There are plenty of Wacko atheists out there to go with the wacko Christens, Buddhists, Muslims, etc..

When people line up extreme views as examples or proof of their argument it is a form of bigotry, and only displays their lack of understanding and fear of what they do not understand.

I have seen some of the most amazing things visiting Alzheimer's patients over the years, and the grace granted to those who care for them.

Sean, not to be rude but the [size=150">evidence[/size">, not [size=150">beliefs[/size"> point clearly to the fact that we descended from Ape, Monkey, Bird and Fish. You [size=150">believe[/size"> in an infallible pope and confessing your sins to a priest. Unfortunately that and many other parts of Catholicism are not even bible based. In fact they fly in the face of the actual scripture. I have an easier time with fundamentalist who believe in the scriptures verbatim

She's a nurse and her department dresses for the occassion on Friday before the big day each year............she gets very scary.

Just thought I would add that during this convesation on religion

I have many fundamentalist friends I admire and respect.

Larry, I have recently began studying the Church Fathers, the men responsible for the New Testament. It is a very good way to learn and go deeper in Faith. You might be surprised what the early church believed and how they lived. It was a life of persecution, yet great obedience and faith to the teachings that Jesus disciples shared and spread.

I have learned long ago that it is far better [u">for me [/u">to study and learn more about my own faith than pick-a-part at others beliefs. Like I said, I have no problem with people having different beliefs. Good people come in all different packages, (I believe) that is how God made us.

This thread did not start as an argument for a or against the death penalty, Sean. It started out as an example of religious hypocrisy.

Sean, it's really not the case that it bothers us that you believe in god. Rather, it is the case that people who believe in God, despite the dearth of any evidence, insist that everyone else has to follow them and to that end they will discriminate, harrass and kill non believers or people who have a different religious system.

When you question the logic of a believer, they immediately become defensive and want to know why you care so much..... I really don't, but you guys won't leave me alone. You're at my door with the Watchtower or you're a politician who says that atheists aren't Americans and shouldn't have any rights or you're on the street corner with a sign or you're on 46 tv channels shouting your message of a god that loves me, but will punish me if I don't believe in him.

Theists love to play the part of the aggrieved minority, but just the opposite is true.

    Regards,

    Steve

Disclaimer: I believe there is more to us than just our time on earth but I am not active in any formal religion.

From my cheap seat, It appears the atheists on this discussion have taken the defensive and argumentative posture. Steve, your reasoning for being offended is bit over the top. You make it sound as if every God believer is standing outside you front door with a pitch fork and I have never heard a politician say Atheists are "un"-American.

This may be against my better judgement, but this discussion has moved me to post...

I am an agnostic... a flaming one, I'm told!

My brother is an atheist... I remind him that he can't prove his position any more than his opposition can...

I live my life trying to follow the golden rule... if there's something afterwards, I'd like to feel that I have hedged my bet...

    That's it, in a nutshell...

Rather, it is the case that people who believe in God, despite the dearth of any evidence, We put our faith in different evidence, and evidence is not proof insist that everyone else has to follow them and to that end they will discriminate, harrass and kill non believers or people who have a different religious system. This is a pretty extreme view of religious people. I would say a small minority of people of most faiths are guilty of this.

Hey I block a lot of channels from my screen, I would suggest you learn how to use that box on your TV. Here is another suggestion don't let people with extreme views get you down. Our Character has a lot more to do with our human nature, and this is always a better way to judge a person compared to ideology.

Theists love to play the part of the aggrieved minority, but just the opposite is true.

You really should just chill a little bit Steve, people here (on the GCSAA forum) freely share opinions and enjoy a spirited debate but I have not seen many personal attacks. Religion is one of the big Taboos to discuss in public, and that is why there is so much misunderstanding. Tolerance should never be mistaken for acceptance, or approval and it sould be OK to not appove, some how we have moved to the point that it is not OK to disagree. I can tolerate a lot of things that are done in our society that I would never participate in. I have no problem with your athiesim , and I do not think it makes you a bad guy, and I am not your judge anyway. I am working on my own soul, and God (and anyone else who knows me well) know thats a lot of work

    Regards,

    Steve

    Jambo, ("Hello" in Swahili)

Guilty on all counts, may God have mercy on my soul (presuming, of course, that He does in fact exist, which I cannot prove through any direct, physical, evidence).

I'm booked to fly to Mombasa (Kenya) on Thursday.

I kid you not. I love it there.

I am reminded of a television interview I saw once about fifteen years ago with Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John, the legendary New Orleans musician, who spoke of his belief in God. I thought he brought a refreshingly practical perspective to the issue.

He said (paraphrasing from memory), "Sure, I believe in God, and here's why. If you don't believe in God, and it turns out He does exist like the Bible says, then you're gonna go to Hell. On the other hand, if you do believe in God, and it turns out He don't exist, then you ain't really lost nothin', you'll be in the same place anyway. So it makes more sense to believe, and that way I got a shot at heaven."
