Jeff Wallace passed away today in Spokane Washington after a relatively short battle with cancer. His sister Penny was with him at the end.
    I shall miss you, Jeffy

Another shock coming just after David McCallums passing.

Jeff was the funniest guy on this forum, and it will be a much poorer place for his loss. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jeff face to face, but we communicated frequently over the years on this forum, and by e-mails and phone calls.

I for one will miss him.

Jeff was one-of-a-kind. I will truly miss him after years on the Forum. He did his best to stay active on the Forum all the while keeping his health issues to himself and a few others.

Rest in peace, my friend. Say hi to DMac for us.

I can't say it any better than what Steve did so I will just agree with his quote. Both gentlemen will be missed.

Another WTH!! That's like 2000 posts gone in a blink.

Jeff had to be one of the wittiest guys on these forums. I'm at a loss for words, something he never suffered from.

    RIP Mr. Jeffrey Wallace.

    Jeff was the man.

His wisdom on the world will sorely be missed. Who can forget his trying to drum up awareness here during the Arab Spring? He knew in some small way it was important as it could help the little guy's lot in life. He really cared about the Egyptian people he had grown to love and know. And I know people there, and other places around the world cared for him too. Just goes to show what a good egg he was.

    I'll miss you my friend,

    Peace

Lost a good man and a good friend. Almost exactly a year ago, my wife and I were sitting with the Kurtas and Jeff at a silly restaurant in Las Vegas. He was ordering oysters and lobster and charging it to our bill while we all got smashed on wine. He was feeling good and hopeful and trying to do some networking to find a new position. I'm gonna try to keep that memory alive and remember him as a vibrant, hopeful and alarmingly charming person.

    Regards,

    Steve

These were from Jeff's last swing through the area about a year and a half ago on his way up to Pale's.
"Wallace St." in Syracuse just outside of a bbq joint we were coming from, where he made our waitress almost swoon with his charm, wit, and politeness. He was an amazing guy. Always a gentleman.

Once again it is our great loss to say good bye to a gentleman superintendent. I was fortunate to have crossed paths with Jeff during my career. He is the type of gentleman who makes a immediate impression. As a superintendent few could parallel his achievements hop scotching the globe building and managing golf courses. I am pretty sure Jeff could have done anything in this life but he had a passion for our business and our way of life. During his career more than once Jeff sacrificed himself for the good of those who worked for him. No greater love than this exists. His depth of character, his wit and charm always put the people around him at ease. With Jeff these gifts were genuine, a man of real compassion and grace. On these forums Jeff was famous for his ability to debate as a devils advocate. Many of us got wise to him over the years but it was always fun to watch him spin his web and catch his fly. Yet he never took nor made a issue too personal. During a discussion with Jeff there was always the opportunity to learn, share, understand and respect. I think if there was one word to describe Jeff Wallace it is[u"> Respect[/u">, because he always showed it, gave it and most importantly earned it.

Years ago DMac, Jeff and I sat together and chatted about all the characters on this forum, many of which are long gone from the business now. We recognized that there was a bond developed through the course of active debate that only made us more enlightened. We as forum participants took more from Jeff than we gave, his base of cultural awareness and experience will be deeply missed.

Now it is a time for rest, when our body gives out our soul is set free. What ever you believe I hope you recognize that Jeff left this world a better place and I know I am a better man for having called Jeff Wallace my friend.

    Well Done Wallace! Well Done!!

Wow, quite a surprise. I remember jeffy for his wit and knowledge but mostly how he made it thru the hurricane in cancun, severely injured it alive.

His remarks will be missed and like dmac too quick and too soon.

More sad news, I know I can't find words to do either Jeff or David justice.

But those that believe and even if those that don't, I wish I was a fly on the wall as those two carry on together now. While we might not live up to their skills, especially in debate, hopefully we do not tarnish their memories, we need to continue to debate and learn from each other with open minds and continue to respect each other like they did to each other and to all of us.

I still cannot believe it is true, Jeff was simply amazing. A brilliant smart ass with a heart of gold. Jeff taught me so much about life, ethics and proper grammar,,, that I will be forever in his dept. He was a stickler for details and it showed in everything he did. You will be missed my friend.

It really hits me in the gut to hear that Jeff is gone. The forum will be much less enjoyable without him here. I remember having dinner with him at the 2003 GIS in Atlanta. He had recently been through his Cancun hurricane ordeal. The guy was hilarious and genuine in every way. My wife and I enjoyed spending the evening with him. He had the gift of being able to relate and get along with everybody. Sean was dead on with his comments about Jeff and the way he respected everybody. It was like him to not tell anybody about his illness either. I will miss him very much.

Another great loss for this group. I've always been amazed at the words guys can translate from their brain to the keyboard like Jeff could do. For some it comes naturally and for others we have to work really hard at putting a proper sentence together. Sounds like he was a true renaissance man from those of you that knew him well. I still remember his posts regarding Egypt. No doubt he feared for some of his friends during the turmoil that was and is taking place there. Wow, let the debate begin anew!

Larry Allan said: One hump or two?....When Jeff was in Egypt, he and Petey Bowman had a back and forth on the forum of hysteric proportions. I tried to go back and find it in the old forums the other day only to find the forums retired.

Does anyone out there remember Jeffs response to "One hump or two?" I can't for the life of me but it sent me to the floor in laughter.

One other thing, I think the greatest tragedy is that Jeff had suffered so much pain since his fall during the Cancun Hurricane followed up by a botched back surgery in Cairo, that the pain that came with the cancer was likely ignored as minor compared to the rest of what he was going through. He could have possibly survived the cancer.

When I met him a couple of years back, I would have been completely shocked by his condition had it not been for a warning call from Steve Kurta. Every movement, every step, brought out a cold sweat on his face. My only thought was that this man should be in a hospital, not driving the country side in a cigar tube motor home visiting. But that was Jeff. I'm better for having known him.

(Jeffs response from reading that last sentence would be to ask me to rewrite it so that people would get the impression we "knew" each other in the biblical sense)

Funny, as everyone has stated, handsome as Steve K said and an alarmingly charming person as Steve H mentioned, just to name a few of his attributes.

I only knew him through the forum but you could tell he was a very bright sharp guy. I have always admired the guys in our industry willing to travel the world and obviously take risks. He had been to some unique places. His wit and intelligence will be missed. RIP fellow superintendent.

    Red,

Best of my recollection was that Jeff had mentioned, probably jokingly, about riding camels around in the Egyptian desert. He said something about having to use a step stool or maybe a ladder to...............mount the beast, to which I replied...."was it one hump, or two?

For the life of me I cannot recall his response/s. I wish I could.

In 1987, Jeff walked onto my golf course construction site in Cave Creek, Arizona and asked if I was hiring. He said he could do irrigation so I said you can start now so pick up a shovel. He turned around and started to walk away muttering under his breath so I told him I was joking. Little did I know that he held an irrigation license in Texas. He helped me design and install the rest of the job. He was a genius. That was the start of a long relationship for which I will be eternally grateful. From that beginning, Jeff and I worked together for about a year and he began to ask questions about Agronomy so I suggested he go to school. Then to Rutgers and the rest is history. Now I wish I had spent more time with him online lately to stay in touch better. He was a friend to me and all my kids. We spent some Thanksgivings and Christmas' together and I always enjoyed hearing his stories of travel as only Jeff could tell "em. My heart is heavy today but I have some great memories. See you one day my friend
    Jim

    Greetings;

I am almost afraid to open a post. I am devastated about Jeff's passing. i loved his posts, wit and sense of humor. I remember in 2003 in Atlanta, i had to leave because my daughter Gail developed breast cancer. After surgery removing lymph nodes, chemoteropy, radiation she is a survivor and doing very well today.

So, I did not meet Jeff & some of the others. When I saw Steve Kurta's pictures of Jeff, I almost fainted cause he looks exactly like my younger brother Alan.

Jeff take it easy on my friend Dave Mac in Heaven and Rest in Peace.
