Keeping equipment (and golf carts) out of the the water is tough. All of my employees are VERY LONG TERM employees. This equates to less (basically no) mistakes. (I like having SEIU Employees.) All of my equipment is old and has been rebuilt many times, but I have a bunch of it. I do not have many employees, but they can do everything in a hurry if necessary. If we had a storm coming we could mow everything and spray it with Primo in one day - all hands on deck.

Having said this, I could put a mower in even with a conservative.... eeer, maybe better, careful attitude because it can happen to the best operator.

That's the high water mark from the 6" rain last week.

The operator was cited for DWS.

Well Steve, we discovered the problem with you and the all your employees. Your training techniques obviously suck and your employees must be short term non-union slacks. Had you worked for Scott none of this would have happened.

I hope you call Scott for advice on training, employee retention, equipment management and crisis preparation so you don't have so many problems in the future.

Does DWS mean driving while sleeping? or driving while stupid? I have had both on my crew.

last year my cart ended up in the lake. i will not go into details but it cost me to keep the pics off the Internet!

My poorly made point was just to say that it has been much, much easier for me to have well compensated employees with a stake in the business.

Just curious, what stake in the business do your SEIU employees have that non-SEIU employees elsewhere might not have?

They qualify for pensions. They get 3% of their salaries for life for every year they work up to 25 years. If the business fails they still get their pensions earned to that point but no more. At 25 years they can enter the DROP Plan for five years.

I have done both in my career.

I get what Scott is trying to say, those guys have a good reason to make sure they stay employed and that the golf course is doing well financially, is what I am guessing. If the golf course doesn't do well, they could always be downsized as the course is leased to a management company. They might get lucky and get transferred to another position in parks, but those have to be open. Also they are less likely to jump ship when someone offers them $1 more an hour. The bigger question is did he need to say it?

But I'm thinking as far as training, from just seeing Steve's post over the years, I would bet he does a bang up job.

I certainly did not mean to come across as if someone was not doing their job or that I do it better. I apologize if that is how it sounded. It is my impression and it has been my experience that golf course employees are underpaid especially considering the strenuous nature of their work and the expectations of their performance.

We're just busting your chops, Scotty. My guys have all been with me for a long time and even though things happen from time to time, they all know their jobs and do them well in spite of being non union.

This mower was being operated by a brand new, part time employee who is about 80 years old. I was more worried about him having a heart attack than there being any damage to the machine. He was trying to impress me with how well he could do his job and mow every blade of grass that he saw, poor old dude thought I was gonna fire him.

As far as union employees go, I have no problem at all with unions, they made the middle class in this country, but ask the union workers at golf courses around Chicago how well that went for them when the maintenance was all outsourced to Billy Casper due to exorbitant costs.

    Regards,

    Steve

I came to this position over ten years ago after I was let go from a management company where I was a regional manager. So far the club has done well and managed to remain in the black for 27 years. This is because my former boss, the man who started this club was such a bulldog that no one wanted to cross him. The fact that he was successful did not hurt either. In addition, upper management, the city commissions and the citizens have allowed professional golf course managers to make the decisions. We knew better than to allow unsustainable compensation packages to employees, but also knew we could afford significant compensation with the expectation that it would be offset somewhere else.
