There was a topic here recently asking about David and I did not respond. Those of you that know David know that he would not have wanted the extra attention or to have to repeat the story to so many of his friends here. David passed away this morning of Pancreatic Cancer. He was diagnosed a couple of months ago but the disease was already in its very late stages. David opted out of the treatment as the doctor told him it would maybe buy him a couple more months and he didn't want to saddle his family with that burden. He faced the disease as bravely as you would expect a Marine to. His sentiments and opinions will be missed here. He also had some deep friendship with the courses that he worked at. I am at one of David's former courses now and they were all saddened to hear of his health issues and he left here many years ago. Please keep his family in your thoughs. RIP David

I don't remember if I still owed David a beer or two, or not, from some old bet, but I'm gonna buy him one today San Diego.

    RIP, buddy.

Wow! Didn't see that one coming. That put a knot in my stomach reading this post. I always enjoyed debating with him and spent a short time with him one night at Bahama Breeze at the GIS in Orlando. Gonna miss him.

    Farewell Marine

The combat boots are empty and finally they're still,
    They're set carefully at attention,
they've marched up their last hill.
The rifle, too, is silent now and unwavering erected,
Holding up the well-worn helmet of the Marine it once protected.
One by one his comrades somberly draw near,
    Each raising one last salute unashamed to shed a tear;
A time-honored tribute, dating back to days of old,
As a reverent memorial a stirring image to behold.
It bears witness to the bond of a brotherhood of men,
The kind who only come along every now and then.
These men who pass will carry on,
    they've a mission to complete,
For our Country they will fiercely fight, our enemies they'll defeat.
But in his heart after this,
no Marine will be the same,
A hero is now known to him,
    and bears his buddy's name.
Wherever duty takes him, whatever battles he may fight,
Never will he forget the friend who gave his life for what is right.
    Finally, the bugle sounds
    Taps is softly played,
Time to say farewell, and say
a prayer for the sacrifices made.
This day the names of those who died will be added to the List,
They will forever be remembered, and will undeniably be missed.
Next time you see a proud Marine in that uniform he wears,
Know his heart is strong and true please keep him in your prayers.
He lives by a vow to protect and defend no matter what the cost,
But to every Marine, it carries a name...his buddy who was lost.

David passed as he lived, with dignity and thinking of others. He was a great friend to many of us on this forum and he will be missed.

    Rest in peace our friend.

I have been expecting to see Davids name posted for about the last month. David announced his illness to several of us back in October and asked that we keep it private.A few weeks ago Scotty put out a message wondering where David was. Knowing Davids wishes I had to lie and say it was a byproduct of the shingles, knowing full well it was much worse.
To this day I have no idea why David chose to include me in that email. We had always been combatants on the forum...but for some reason he did. I spoke to and emailed David numerous time over the past several months and we became friends. Over the past month communication was not returned and I realized he was close to the end. Early in his diagnosis we had discussed me flying down and us doing a road trip to South Florida to see Steve H. Unfortunately by the time I got my passport renewed, David was not in the best of shape and didn't feel that it would work.
I would have loved to have met him. My mental picture of David was forum based....6'2 280 lbs and an angry Jar Head mentality. The truth turned out to be the exact opposite. The phone was answered by a relatively high voice and a southern accent that we northerners always think is put on for our entertainment. We had some great long talks and joked about my mental picture of him. He described himself to be a miniature version of Charles Bronson (maybe not Bronson but one of those movie tough guys). He talked about family and friends and especially those friends he would never have met if it were not for the forum.
I hate to use this term because it dispels illusions but David came across as a "Sweet, Kind Southern Boy" embarking on a battle like none he had ever faced in Viet Nam.
    David, you will be missed

DMAC was a great resource when we were putting in our solar system. I appreciated the help and advice he passed on to me during the process. Always full of knowledge and ready to assist.

I'll be sure to buy him a beer as well this week. I'm sure I owe him at least one.

    RIP David.

    David McCallum,

May Gods name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that he created, as is Gods wish. May Gods sovereignty soon be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.

May Gods Great name be praised throughout all time.

Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter. And let us say: Amen.

Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life's goodness for us and for Israel. And let us say: Amen.

May the one who brings peace to His universe bring peace to us and to all Israel. And lets us say: Amen.

This is the mourner's Kaddish one says over the death of one you are related too or one you care about! May David McCallum Rest in Peace!

I guess it was several years ago when we were presenting recipes, David provided this one as a favorite of his. I have made it half a dozen times and loved it every time:

    OYSTERS IN SHALLOT CREAM SAUCE

    2 tbls of salted butter
    2 large shallots, finely diced
1/4 cup of finely diced fennel, stems and bulbs
    1/4 cup of anisette
    2 cups of heavy cream
    18 large oysters, freshly shucked
1/4 lb (2 1/2 cups) of fresh spinach, cleaned & steamed

In a medium sauté pan over high heat melt the butter. Add shallots and fennel. Sauté for 4-5 minutes until they begin to caramelize. Add anisette and simmer for 1 minute to deglaze the pan. Add the cream. Bring mixture to a high simmer then reduce the heat. Simmer for 4-5 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken. Add oysters and spinach. Incorporate the ingredients in the sauté' pan then remove from heat. Serve with warm French bread.

I was saddened to hear the news about David a few days ago at the GIS. While I had the pleasure to meet David once or twice over the years I know him mostly through his participation on these forums. I have told a few people, but I am one of the rare lucky ones who one day a little over two years ago heard those words pancreas and cancer in the same sentence and am still around. I was very lucky that they caught it very early while looking for kidney stones and it was the less serious type of cancer. There is no way to explain the emotional roller coaster those first few days and months after the initial diagnosis and surgery felt for me and I have no doubt that David did what was best for he and his family.

We will all miss David and his participation here in the forums and his weekly football updates in the fall. May he be in peace and may his family be in all our thoughts and prayers in the coming days.

I was one of the fortunate few that David let know about the situation he was facing. I spoke to him a few times and was amazed at his strength and bravery. Hell, I was in tears when we would get off the phone and he was fine. We never got to play golf or go to dinner in any of his planned visits to San Diego. For a guy I really only got to know through being a voting delegate and seeing each other at the GIS, I feel like I have lost a brother. David, I know you are still here in spirit and probably know every word we have written. We have all lost a great friend. My prayers are with him and his family. All I can say is I love you man! Be at piece with no more pain from the cancer.

I am very sad to learn of the passing of my good friend David K McCallum.

I met David during a GCSAA committee meeting many years ago and we immediately formed a meaningful friendship. We stayed connected via phone calls and e-mails and can honestly say that David played a big role in my life and was instrumental in shaping who I am today.

David was a great supporter and a great friend. He always encouraged me to be the best I could be and to believe in myself. He made a big difference in my life with his advice and friendship. Thank you for everything my friend.

    God Bless.

    Josh,

I heard while at the conference that David had passed away. David was a person with a deep soul. His personal experiences molded him into a man who we knew here as a Patriot, Veteran, Husband, Father, Friend, Gambler, LSU Fan, and Superintendent. I first met David serving on a committee together in 1997, he served his fellow GCSAA member's many years in many ways and was a very influential unsung leader in our ranks well before he graced this forum with his wit and guile. It seems like David rarely missed a GCSAA annual meeting, I know that next year during the reading of the Necrology Report ( a very solemn and respectful part of the meeting in which the names of every member who passed away during the year is read) I will salute David a brother GCSAA superintendent with fondness and respect.

I will miss his college football tips in the fall and and his political debate skills all year, but mostly I will miss the gentleman I knew with a touch of Louisiana drawl and a smile that let you know he was your friend.

    God Speed David McCallum!

I haven't looked at the forum recently, so I'm late to post. This is sad news indeed. David and I had some epic political arguments on this forum, but at the GIS in Orlando a few years ago we had dinner with a group of posters and there was never any antipathy between us. I like to think we formed a friendship then and there, even though we continued to disagree on our world views.

I think the last post I saw from David was that he was retiring with his hard-earned 401k money. It's a tragedy that he can't enjoy the years he worked so hard for. He is a good man, and worthy of everyone's respect.

My sincere condolences to his loved ones.
