Greg kinda looks like a turtle so he may be projecting a little.

Now is a terrapin a turtle or a different species? What is a Algonquian anyways and why don't they speak english? Why are other countries using a Indian name for their turtles? If in the UK red-eared sliders are known as "red-eared terrapins", does that mean they don't call the sliders? Is Terrapin beer made from real terrapins or sliders? Why is Terrapene, the Latin name for the box tortoise genus, a genus which does not include terrapins make any sense?

I am not going to sleep tonight with all these unanswered questions.

Seems the Maryland forgot to come out after half time. Really surprised the Nole women lost to Maryland the other night.

Hoping the Nole men have worked out the kinks and have a good season in the ACC.

Nice win by the Spartans last night at Wisconsin which is always a very tough place to play. Can't believe how happy coach Izzo was after the game. Not sure they are ready for national championship yet but already have several good wins and look much better that they did earlier this year. The Big 10 schedule can be brutal so a lot can happen in the next two months. Based upon everything that has already happened this year it looks like March Madness is going to be great this year!!

ouch! Terps mens team is young and up and down. No doubt Duke beat them up, but we will come back and fight again and again. The Terps mens team are setting up for the long haul down the road and will be back in top 20 down the line but not this year! However the Lady Terps rule beating Clemson by 30 points last night in a romp on the road! They even have 4 very good players hurt one a true all american candidate! So always as we say Fear the Turtle! This season and next ACC, then look out Big Ten we coming in to light a new fire! Down the line in lots of sports, wrestling, gymnastics, golf, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, track and field, so we are not a single sport school! Football also comming along from a poor past few years! Terrapin Nation Proud! Not to mention a great school for turfgrass management education!!!!!!!!!

Nice win by the Spartans last night over the Wolverines. As a Michigan State fan it was nice to watch a game that never really was in doubt and showed the continued improvement of our team. After a game at Nebraska on Saturday 4 games in a row against top 20 teams including a big game next week at home vs. Indiana. The schedule in the Big 10 is just brutal this year. Go Spartans!!!

Once again Lady Terps rule, after a tough loss to Duke, we respond with a huge win over Clemson! Way to go! Later this week the men play honoring Lefty Driesell! A great coach honest man who lead the terps to great teams John Lucas, Len Elmore, Tom Mcmillan finished second in the country to North Carolina when only 1 team from each league went to NCAA tourney! We won the NIT that year when it meant something! Finished #2 in Nation behind A man named Michael Jordan....who I met on day playing golf when I was Super at Kemper Lakes back in the day> He was suprised I did not fall down and want an autograph....I smiled and told him after shaking his hand that I was a Maryland Terrapin! He smiled back and understood! Everytime after when he came out to play at Kemper Lakes he was friendly smiled and we chatted about golf! Tee it high and let it fly! He did play good golf too!

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Maryland coach Mark Turgeon fought back tears of happiness when asked to describe his feelings about beating Duke.

Turgeon had just experienced the highlight of his two-year stint with the Terrapins, an 83-81 win over the second-ranked Blue Devils on Saturday night, and he was nearly too choked up to talk about it.

"It has been a hard week on my family, hard on my son last week. He had to leave the stands because the fans were so hard on his dad," Turgeon said, referring to crowd reaction during the Terrapins' home loss against Virginia.

"This win was for my family and the fans," Turgeon said. "I really wanted to beat Duke. This means a lot to me."

The stunning victory evidently meant a lot to the sellout crowd, too, as thousands of fans rushed the court immediately after the final buzzer to celebrate.

"It was a big win for us, for the school," guard Nick Faust said.

Center Alex Len, who had 19 points and nine rebounds, added, "I know our fans have waited for this win for four years."

Seth Allen, who had 16 points, broke a 81-81 tie by making two free throws with 2.8 seconds left. Coming off a five-day break, Maryland notched its most significant win of the season.

Duke was outrebounded 40-20, never led in the second half and got only four points and three rebounds from 6-foot-10 senior center Mason Plumlee.

"This has been an exhausting schedule for our team," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We're playing on fumes and I think you could tell that with Mason. I thought he looked exhausted the whole game. He's been great. Obviously not good tonight."

The Terrapins (18-7, 6-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) did not trail after halftime but never could pull away.

Duke (22-3, 9-3) was down by 10 with 3:39 left but pulled even when Rasheed Sulaimon made three foul shots with 16.7 seconds to go. Quinn Cook then fouled Allen as the freshman guard drove through the lane, and Allen made both shots.

After a Duke timeout, Cook's desperation 30-footer bounced off the back rim. Chaos ensued as the fans immediately rushed the court.

"I told our players before the game, there's a lot of pride in Maryland basketball," Turgeon said. "There's also a lot of passion about Maryland basketball. We talked about playing with those two things for us and for our fans. Our fans were just tremendous." From the end of the Star-Spangled Banner to the final buzzer, the crowd never stopped shouting for the Terps, who rewarded their fans with a memorable victory in a rivalry that appears destined to end when Maryland leaves for the Big Ten in 2014.

The Blue Devils had their six-game winning streak end. Seth Curry scored 25 and Cook added 18. But Plumlee was completely outplayed by the 7-1 Len, who went 6 for 8 from the field and 7 for 8 at the foul line.

Maryland committed 26 turnovers, eight by Allen. But the Terrapins shot an impressive 60 percent from the floor.

Maryland led 66-63 before Allen scored on a drive. Dez Wells then stole the ball from Cook and went in for a dunk for a seven-point lead with 5:20 left. After the Blue Devils closed to 71-63, James Padgett made a layup for Maryland and Wells made two foul shots for a 10-point cushion.

The crowd increased its volume with every subsequent basket by the Terrapins, whose previous win over Duke came in March 2010, when Greivis Vasquez celebrated Senior Night with a 20-point performance.

In this one, it was 80-72 before Curry made two straight 3-pointers to bring Duke to 80-78 with just under a minute left. After Wells was called for a charge, Curry had a 15-footer bounce in and out of the basket.

It was that kind of night for the Blue Devils.

The score was 39-all before Allen hit a 3-pointer to spark a 10-2 run that included five points from freshman Shaquille Cleare. It was 53-43 before Curry bagged a 3-pointer, Alex Murphy made a layup and Curry drove the lane following Maryland's third turnover in a 60-second span.

That cut the gap to three points, and seconds after a 3-pointer by Cook got the Blue Devils to 55-53.

After the Terrapins went up by six, they committed turnovers on three straight possessions. That enabled Duke to close to 59-57 on a dunk by Murphy, but four straight free throws by Len gave Maryland a 64-59 advantage with 7:20 remaining

I cannot Help but Smile and paste this big huge victory for the Terrapins! Final game against Duke at home as an ACC team, Look out Big ten here we come! Maryland now makes a huge leap to say we belong in 64 teams of NCAA Championship! We outplayed Duke in Second Half without one of our top point guard out for team rule violation (also a proud bravo to new coach no BS allowed) the team pulled together and put it on Duke! Alex Len showed Dukes top rated Center who is boss inside! I was amazed NBA scouts were drooling as the annoucers stated!! FEAR THE TURTLE!!! NCAA Tourney here we come and ACC Championship tourney look out!!

You got me on that one for sure, but as we say it was on the tribal home ground so it does happen and they beat us bad! The Lady Terps will get over it quickly as ACC tourney is coming up and then NCAA tourney!! We are doing our best with 4 great players sitting on the bench out for the year since early, no excuses, just put up our best and then next year doing it again with all coming back!! So yes Seminoles did well Last night at home I saw it and was amazed at their change since we kicked their butts early in the season! SO it may be a rematch in the ACC tourney later in the month! Lady Terps rule despite having a tough year injuries and tough schedule making it a long season, now its ACC Tournament Time, then NCAA Tournament Time! Go Lady Terps!

    March 7, 2013

2013 ACC Tournament Bracket | ACC Tournament Central | Game Notes

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Head coach Brenda Frese of the Maryland women's basketball team was voted ACC Coach of the Year by the league's head coaches and junior Alyssa Thomas was named ACC Player of the Year by the Blue Ribbon Panel for the second straight season Thursday. Frese's honor is her first by the conference in her 11 seasons at Maryland. Thomas is the first in school history to be named Player of the Year twice.

Frese, the 2002 Associated Press National Coach of the Year, led the Terrapins to the No. 2 seed in this weekend's ACC Tournament and a record of 23-6 overall and 14-4 in ACC play, despite key season-ending injuries to the Terps' starting guards Brene Moseley and Laurin Mincy, as well as center Essence Townsend in the fall. As the season wore on, the Terrapins lost freshman Tierney Pfirman to a dislocated knee cap and played a stretch with seven available players.

"I've never had a player respond to challenges and have a year like Alyssa Thomas," Frese said. "She's willing to give every ounce of herself and do whatever her team needs. When adversity struck our team, she was a leader and always was the first person to step up and do more."

Thomas, a 6-2 forward, has played every position on the floor for the Terrapins and led the league in rebounding with 10.4 per contest. She was second in assists (5.2) and third in scoring (17.7). In the 18 conference games, she led all players in scoring (19.7), rebounding (11.0) and assists (5.3). She notched an ACC-high 17 double-doubles this year, 12 in conference play.

"This year has been a really interesting road for us, but I think as a team, we've taken it all on and never made an excuse," Thomas said. "To be voted this honor again is really special because there a lot of really good players in our league. I just work hard every day to make my team better and be the best I can."

Thomas is the fourth Terrapin to earn ACC Player of the Year honors and third under Frese. Kristi Toliver earned the award in 2009 and Crystal Langhorne did in 2008. Last year, she was the first underclassman in school history to earn the league's top individual honor and just the second in conference history.

"Alyssa Thomas is the most powerful player in the country and the best player in the ACC back to back years," television analyst Debbie Antonelli said. "One of the best shot-makers and finishers in the country added play-making to her skill set which makes her more dangerous to defend and her teammates more productive and efficient. When she is motoring down the middle of the floor with the ball, there is no one better at making decisions or playing the game with balance and power."

Frese has now been named Coach of the Year in every conference she's coached. She was named Big Ten Coach of the Year while at Minnesota in 2002 and Mid-American Coach of the Year in 2000 while at Ball State.

"There's a tremendous group of coaches in the ACC and to be honored by them is incredible," Frese said. "I'm really flattered. This is an individual award, but it's really about every person in our program. I specifically want to thank my staff for their tireless work ethic behind the scenes. Between them and our players, I'm fortunate to be surrounded by great people who make what we do a lot of fun. I couldn't be prouder of how we've fought to get better each and every day, no matter the circumstance."

Frese and her staff of associate head coach Tina Langley, Marlin Chinn and David Adkins, restructured the team's practice time, cutting their practice time on the floor to just twice a week at 75 minutes each session.

"Coach Frese continues to validate her system and success by finding ways to win through adversity without excuse," television analyst Debbie Antonelli said. "It is the true sign of a teacher and definition of a coach who finds ways to put her players in positions to succeed for the good of the team. Maryland finished second in the ACC replacing so many players from last year. They had a great year in the league. Congratulations to Coach Frese and her staff for being recognized by their peers."

Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie was named ACC Coach of the Year by the Blue Ribbon Panel, which is comprised of media members and representatives from each school, as well as some national media members. Duke's Chelsea Gray was voted ACC Player of the Year by the league's head coaches.

Rookies Malina Howard and Chloe Pavlech were named to the All-ACC Freshman Teams Tuesday. Senior Tianna Hawkins and Thomas were voted to the All-ACC First Team Monday.

The 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team will play seventh-seeded Georgia Tech or 10th-seeded Wake Forest Friday at 6 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C. The game will be shown on RSN and specific television channels will be released this week.

Maryland earned a first round bye for the eighth time under Frese. The Yellow Jackets (14-15, 7-11) and the Demon Deacons (12-18, 5-13) will play Thursday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to take on the Terrapins. Maryland's 14 conference wins are a school record.

Dez Wells lands a layup in the first half

    March 15, 2013

    AP Gallery

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Dez Wells slapped the floor - and knocked No. 2 Duke out of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Wells scored a career-high 30 points and Maryland upset the Blue Devils 83-74 on Friday night in the ACC tournament quarterfinals.

Wells was 9 of 13 from the field and 10 of 10 from the free throw line to lead the seventh-seeded Terrapins (22-11).

In delivering the first big shocker of the week in Greensboro, they never trailed, held the league's best team from 3-point range to 4-of-25 shooting from beyond the arc, and bolstered their NCAA tournament credentials with their second straight win over Duke.

Mason Plumlee had 19 points to lead the second-seeded Blue Devils (27-5), whose quest for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament took a jolt.

They had the ball trailing by six points with about 2 minutes left after Seth Curry hit a rare 3-pointer and the Blue Devils got an even rarer defensive stop.

But Tyler Thornton missed 3-pointers on consecutive trips downcourt and Wells and Seth Allen followed with two free throws apiece, with Allen's stretching the lead to 77-67 with 1:44 left.

Duke didn't get closer than five the rest of the way.

Four Maryland players finished with 10 points apiece - Allen, Nick Faust, Jake Layman and Alex Len. The Terrapins outrebounded Duke by 10 and made 23 of 25 free throws.

They also had the most dominant player on the floor in Wells, who surpassed his previous high of 25 points set in December against George Mason.

In the process, he delivered his team's biggest statement during the run that put the Terps well on their way to the win. Immediately after the 7-foot-1 Len buried an unlikely 15-foot jumper, Wells gave the floor a hard slap - a jab at the Blue Devils' we-mean-business trademark on defense.

Rasheed Sulaimon had 16 points and Curry finished with 15 for the Blue Devils, who won the tournament the last three times it was played in Greensboro - in 2006, 2010 and 2011.

But they've lost two straight games in this building, also the site of their one-and-done loss to 15th-seeded Lehigh in their NCAA tournament opener last year. They lost for the first time this season with Ryan Kelly in the lineup; they were 9-4, with an 83-81 loss at Maryland last month, while the power forward was out with a right foot injury.

And their quest to become the fourth program with 2,000 victories will have to wait - this loss leaves them at 1,998.

After missing nine of their first 10 3-pointers, they finally started to warm up in the second half.

Curry - who was scoreless in the first half - converted a four-point play to spark a run that brought the Blue Devils within one. Kelly's three-point play with 13:41 left pulled Duke to 45-44 - the closest it had been since the opening tip.

But Duke had serious trouble stopping the Terps, who scored on 12 of 17 trips downcourt and used an 18-6 run to stretch the lead back out to 13. Pe'Shon Howard's free throw with 5:47 left put Maryland up 65-52.

The teams split the regular-season series, with each winning on its home court. Duke pulled away late to rout the Terrapins by 20 on Jan. 26, before Maryland sprung their previous upset of the then-No. 2 Blue Devils three weeks later in one of Plumlee's worst games of the season.

The third meeting was dominated by the Terrapins, from the tip to the final buzzer.

And Wells was particularly unstoppable. He scored three times over Kelly, dunking on him once and contorting himself for two layups around the fellow Raleigh native, on his way to 16 points in the opening 20 minutes.

All I can say now is Lets Go Terps! One more Please!! NCAA Championship Tournament Hopes alive for sure now! Beat # 2 Team in Country twice this season!! Another win in ACC Tournament would be Awesome!!

Gregg, sorry to see that Maryland didn't make it. They played some very good basketball at the end of the season. My team, the San Diego State Aztecs limped into the tournament losing several of their last games. Maryland should probably be in and we should have been skipped. The tournament is always unfair to some team. My Aztecs might get by the Sooners but they certainly will go no further. If they even beat the Sooners it will probably be by only a couple. They just don't shoot well enough, turn the ball over too often due to playing too fast and they will not match up with any big team. New Mexico proved that the other night!
