I am sure this was bounced around the old site, but I am interested in everyone's staff size. Really all I am looking for is how many workers per acre on average, I think that is the most "average" way to go about this. Or, if anyone knows a site or publication. I cannot find anything on line.
thank you in advance for your cooperation :D

    Brian:

Staff size, in my opinion, should be determined after a set of maintenance standards are agreed upon by your owner(s), board, committee or membership. Once you have established what tasks need to be accomplished, how often the particular task needs to be preformed then you can arrive at an hourly amount that meets the needs to satisfy the standards that are expected. Once you arrive at total hours you can then estimate how many staff members you'll need. You should assign each task with a cycle time to discover how long each task takes. Some critical tasks need to be accomplished on a before time basis to further adjust crew size i.e. mow greens, change hole cups. Travel time is another variable that should be considered, some maintenance buildings are central some are on the outskirts of the property. It takes considerable time to formulate but once the process is complete it's hard to argue with the numbers. In addition, it puts the questions to the decision makers on what should be eliminated or modified in the set of standards before cuts labor or other expenses occur.

By comparing per acre might seem like a good idea those numbers will be all over the place based on many factors such as:
    • Architecture (links, park style, flat, hilly)
    • Size of features (greens, tees, sand bunkers, fairways)
    • Equipment fleet size (number of fairway mowers, rough mowers, greens mowers)
    • Equipment type (hand greens mowers, large rough mowers)
    • First tee time (5:30 am as opposed to 7:00 am)
    • Hand mow greens
    • Hand rake sand bunkers
    • Level of conditioning (private exclusive club or muni in small town)
    • Geography (southern course or northern course)
    • Type of turf (cool season vs. warm season)
    And the list goes on.

When we do an operational study we consider what the client needs (standards) and figure what size crew, based on hours should be.

Mike is correct about that, I used to have 20 staff members at my last job, but when I looked at man hours it equated to about 480 man hours per week with the many part timers I had. We had about 110 acres of course, 15 of athletic fields and maybe 20 of campus.

Same here where I'm at. I have 9? Which include myself, 2 other full-timers, a mechanic that is shared among 3 courses, a PT mechanic who works 24 hours a week, a PT who works 24 hours a week, 3 seasonal that work up to 40 hours a week with one of them doing mostly landscape beds. We have about 90 acres maintained.

I have 20 people and 90 Acres of grass and 40 acres of wooded areas on My course in Japan
    On other jobs:
45 people with 80 acres turf and 30 wooded. 103 people 90+ areas turf and 100 acres of woods
8 people with 80 areas turf and 60 acreas of woods.

A few more that I forget now. It all about the level of maintenance the owners want.

If looking for an average, I would go with the 1 staff per hole. I'm running 18 holes with manpower equal to approximately 12 fulltime. It's not enough.

    90 acres maintained,
    5 full time
    1 seasonal(April-November)
    1 Equipment Tech
    1 Superintendent
    1 Asst Superintendent.

In the annual report it had avg staff size around 20, I thought that was kinda of high for the average. If I had a staff of 20 we would run out of equipment to send them out on!

I should add that my clubhouse staff takes care of most of the mini golf and horseshoe pits and that we use the parks department's mechanic. My assistant took is first day off since may, yesterday. I took a Saturday off the last part of June and my operator took Sunday morning off. Other than that, if the day of the week ends in 'y', we work it. And I'm up one part time person over last year!!

You can't go by acreage. I have small acreage, but I still have an 18 hole private golf course, 18 greens, 18 sets of tees, etc, etc. I have 16 guys on the course and a 4 man common grounds crew. I manage 52 acres of golf course with 45k rounds per year, 1500 members, all of the medians, the roads, the clubhouse, the right of ways, the entrances, the preserves, the tennis courts, the parking lots, the street lights and I provide everyone with irrigation water........it goes on and on. There's more to it than the number of acres.

    Regards,

    Steve

    27 holes
18 on the "big course" and a 9 hole par 3 course, Driving range, and an extra putting green, links style course in Richmond, KY.
    1 Supt.
    1 Ass supt.
    1 Hort guy full time
5 seasonal guys of which 3 are only part time

The course is Bentgrass tee to green and a Muni.
My Supt. is great he somehow gets everything done with only 8 people and the course stays in great condition considering our budget and the amount of play we get.

Gibson Bay golf course in Richmond Ky if anyone wanted to know.

110 acres, 18 holes, semi-private, southern course (New Orleans) customer/owners expect a high-level of course conditioning.

    1 Superintendent
    1 Asst. Superintendent
    1 Mechanic
    1 Asst. Mechanic
7 FTE (1 devoted to landscaped areas/clubhouse maintenance)
    4 PTE (36 hrs/week in season, 20hrs/week in winter)

In my opinion thats understaffed considering some of the shapes and sizes of our bunkers that need to stay mowed, edged, etc. while still walking mowing greens, rolling greens, changing cups, mowing rough EVERYDAY, and fairways/tees/apps 3 days/week. 4 flame shaped bunkers, 1 fleur de lis bunker, 1 maltese cross bunker, and 2 very large waste bunkers, plus 25 normal bunkers... = a nightmare for our crew members it takes about 1 week for 3-4 guys all day long to detail them.
