How does everyone set the hoc on a verti-cutting unit? I have leveled the rollers out on two 2x4's but i need to set the height. Should I be using an Accu-gage?

    Adrian,

We just use a normal height bar and draw a line at the depth we want with a marker. It works great for us and with the carbide tiped blades we have not adjusted the height/depth in a couple years.

To be honest I would not buy this guage. while it is a good idea, the design leaves it vulnuable to getting bent and out of adjustment. I looked at it at the trade show this last year and decided that the old flat bar adjustment is a far better method of setting your verticutters. To start off with, who needs to be within .001" of a height for verticutting. Take the flat bar, draw a line at the height you want and set each side of the verticutter to the line. if you want to get more accurate, get a machine shop to grind out the amount you want from an edge of the bar.

I've use the flat bar, and I have had two of these gages for setting units at two different facilities and they are pretty durable and good. It really just depends on the person and operation and what your looking for. At one facility I hand a mill and could take what I wanted off the flat bar and be very accurate. Precision in Pompano Florida sells them for a reasonable price.

I take a old piece of metal bar whatever depth i go from a 1/8 to 1/4 and set that bar under the wheels and get the verticutters to just tickle the wood area that they above. Seems to work good and I not worried about getting that precise about it.
