I have recently started mowing my teeing areas with a rotary walk-behind mower. At it's lowest setting it mows at 1 inch. This is a 22" homeowner type machine and may not last very long using it the way that I do. Does anyone else use a rotary mower for tees that has a 30" wide cut and that is a commercial type mower?? I would like to get a 30" wide cut mower that can do well in wet grass cutting at 1". There is Toro Turfmaster, Time Master and Exmark out there. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Thanks.

Are you talking about around your teeing surfaces? I've done that around greens and bunkers. I've found the best for me is the cheapest mower. The good ones get thrown around the back of carts and trailers etc. Easy and cheap to replace

I heard about this in the UK. Push rotaries with rear rollers. Picked up broken tees and left awesome stripes. http://www.hayter.co.uk/

No, I am talking about actually mowing the tee tops themselves with a rotary mower. By mowing at 1" with a rotary mower, I am leaving twice the leaf material as my triplex that mows at 1/2" and the positive difference has been great. And of course they just look so much better. I have a cool-season mix of fescue, rye and bluegrass on them and they don't respond very well to being mowed really low like bentgrass does. Thats' why I do this. Plus, I have multiple levels on each teeing area and it is a royal pain using the triplex on each one of those squares and rectangles. You spend more time lifting and lowering reels and turning around than you do mowing.

Interesting concept. Do you have to mow more often, so tees do not get too tall? Any feedback on par 3 tees where most are using irons? Are you using any PGR's? I'm guessing many are shaded?

    Thanks!

My place is a 9-hole reg. length course and I don't use PGRs on tees, really don't have budget for it. I've got only 30,000 sq. ft & I'd rather spend more on fertilizer than anything else since they get so beat up between Memorial and Labor Day. And I really can mow less often because the rotary mower won't miss any seedheads that pop up, especially during this flush of growth time of year. On my par 3 tees it has helped tremendously because of all the irons being used and divots taken. Yes about 6 of my teeboxes are shaded. But the real test is when the tourists start coming through in a couple weeks.

I think this is a great idea. Beats the hell out of the "I stimp my tees" crowd.
