Salary or hourly?

Does anyone have a system in place for winter pay compare to summer pay? We all know we just aren't as busy in the winter and get less hours most winters. So for the hourly workers summer pay is a lot more than winter of course. Is there a system where hourly workers can get supplemented in the winter with comparable summer pay but knowing that the long hours are just not there. I am looking for some kind of balance for summer and winter paychecks. Any ideas?

    Jeff,
Tread lightly here. Your state has rules about who can be paid salary or who must be paid by the hour. That said, if you were to hold back summertime pay to disburse in winter, you would likely violate other wage rules. All this might be fine, but all it takes is one disgruntled employee to blow the whistle and your employer would be hit with back wages, penalties, and interest. Why not let your HR people figure this out?

    Richard,
Makes perfect sense thanks for the reply, I just think that there are ways that are legal off course to make it work.

Our non-exempt employees can and do receive comp time in exchange of overtime, and that includes me.

For any hour we work over 40 we are credited with 1.5 hours. We typically use these in the winter months, or when we get weather, and the guys want to take off early.

We do have a maximum amount we can earn which is 240 hours. That many hours are tough to use, especially if you have vacation, and a few floating holidays as we call them. Our other deal is we have to have those hours off the books by the last full pay period in February, (which sometimes stinks because we can still get some bad weather, but we can still use vacation time.)

I have been up at that 240 hour before, but the last few years I have been only getting up to about 120 max, I just trust the crew more, have more outside activities and occasionally won't record all my time.

The only overtime we can get is if we work on a holiday and do not get to take another day off that week as our holiday. I typically get overtime on the 3 main summer holidays.

    Hope that helps.

We do something similar here too Mel. I bust it during the season and even it out during the off season...We get 10 paid holidays here. The wage guys get 8hrs + the hrs they work. I'll take mine when I can. We also get an employee sick day earned every 6 months, which is a good incentive to be at work.
