I had an idea brought up to me by a superintendent I played golf with while visiting family in Colorado this past fall. We where discussing aerifying fairways to only begin talking about what a pain it is to have someone out flagging sprinkler heads ahead of the aerification equipment. He then shared with me the idea of marking your heads with shaving cream. He said he likes it because you can see it from a mile away and it last for about 2 days. He says it would last through a couple of irrigation cycles. Labor is also saved because no one has to return to pick up the flags. I am a rather young superintendent, but I thought this was a neat idea learned from a 40 year super. Has anyone tried this or have any other ideas? I am looking forward to trying the saving cream this summer.

Used the shaving cream method many times. Go and get it at the dollar store.

Use Barbasol......made in Ohio, sponsors 6 PGA/Nationwide players, and more importantly supports the Boomer Esiason Foundation (fighting cystic fibrosis), with donations for all field goals kicked during NFL games on Westwood One radio. Plus a few other charities.

Thanks for the tip, can't wait to fill out my city expense report for shaving cream.

Sounds like a good idea. About how many cans would I need to buy? We have about 200 heads that need marking.

Good idea. I've just been using turf paint, works well too and lasts about a week before its mowed off.

We have been using the turf paint the past few years, found it was easier than flagging. The operators like it better and the golfers love having the irrigation heads marked making it easier for them to find yardage on the heads.
