Just wanted to say that we started aerating today and topdressed first. You guys taught me that and it's pure genius. I thank each and everyone of my Southern Brothern for making me smarter. Maybe I could home school my kid yet....but only if he wants to be a grass cutter, and I wouldn't wish that on anybody.
    Thanks again

I was expecting a Ryder Cup reference.

No sir, I felt bad for you guys. I look at Mickelson in a slightly better light today. He was a very good sport

What are the advantages of topdressing first?

It speed the whole process up (at least with our equipment inventory) and you don't close over the holes or rut by running a full hopper of topdressing over the open holes. It worked extremely well today. I would highly recommend it but you need to put down more sand than normal as there are more open holes to fill

And coupled with the Turf Pride Core Collector and rollers with brushes, there is no need to put ANY equipment on the green after the holes are poked. No rutting and recovery in 3-5 days. Love this method.

I'm confused with this method? How do you clean up the cores, without picking up a lot of the sand? Do you just mat-in with the cores on the surface, then clean-up afterwards?
I don't have a core collector, I just get a bunch of guys with shovels.

We used a core harvester but it is surprising how little sand gets picked up.

We've used this method with mixed results. Topdressing first works great IF the weather cooperates. Picking up the cores over the sand can be difficult after a rain shower. Our aerification dates are set far in advance, so we stick to it despite the weather forecast. If there is a chance of rain, we will cleanup the cores, then topdress. However, I agree that topdressing first with sunny dry weather provides the best finished product bar none.

Back in my poor days, we would use Levelawns to push the cores to the edge. The Levelawn slides right over the sand, leaving it on the green.
