My facility is in the final stages of making a decision between TifEagle and the new Champion G12. I would like to get pros and cons from everyone out there. I have been told (take that with a grain of salt) that the G12 is just a renamed version of the original planting stock of Champion. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Considering that Tifeagle has been around for 20+ years and is proven, that should speak strongly. Champion always seems to mutate and the G12 is so new, that I'm not sure how much testing has been concluded.

I just put Tifeagle on greens after 15 years of Champion, TifEagle is definitely the most genetically stable of the bunch. Champion is the finest, most dense of them but after fighting it for years, I would never plant it again.
    Good luck.

I personally agree with the others. TifEagle the the only genetically pure stand of grass on the market. It didn't start as an off-type or mutation and therefore won't continue to change as the green ages.

That being said, I've had several conversations with guys in North Georgia and into the Carolinas that prefer Champion over TifEagle. All have said the Tifeagle just doesn't do as well up there for whatever reason.

I have had the opportunity to work with both the original Champion and the G12. I can not speak to the genetic stability problem as I have not had that issue arise, but I have witnessed a distinct difference in the rooting capability of the G12 as well as its endurance.
Where my course has Champion greens, my experience with the G-12 comes from helping rescue a course after an episode of dereliction of duty by an exiting superintendent. The G-12 greens were only about 6 months old at the time and had been seriously deprived of water as well as other needed care for an extended period. By the time I was brought on site the turf was seriously weak and degraded but what amazed me is that there was still substantial viable root mass underneath and the roots were uniformly deep (excepting a few areas where high nematode counts were later found). It took awhile but the majority of the greens surface (there was some sodding required but a lot of it had to do with poor grow in and nematode pressure) recovered and is now in excellent condition.
I tell this story to illustrate that I do not think that it is merely the original Champion repackaged. I can see distinct differences and advantages from the G-12. As to weather it is better than TifEagle, I will let you guys figure that out!

Where did the new Champion come from? Is it a selection from a green somewhere?

Outside of New Orleans here and TifEagle beats Champions hands down in our area.

Wierd how it does well up here, but has such a bad reputation in the Gulf Coast region.

Are guys that choose to install Tifeagle looking to maintain putting speeds around 11' plus or more like 9-10' ? Are tournament speeds of 12-13' consistently achievable on Tifeagle?

I know several clubs around here that routinely maintain speeds of 12-13 on TifEagle. Too fast for me but I guess some people think its better that way.

I shoot for 9-10 but for a few reasons. first and foremost is my members are mostly seniors and 11's become too fast for 98% of them. the second is the shape and size of my greens and budget. the shape and size with 11's would cause me to lose 40% of my cup areas and my budget would not allow me to recover after stress situations. Don't get me wrong I have seen 12-13's on my greens when we hosted a qualifier tournament for our local PGA tournament. People practicing during that week were calling other players to come out and play the course due to the conditions which we set up to try to give any qualifiers a good chance of competing in the main event. Problem was that the night before the qualifier a front blew in and dried out the greens even more and made them really hard to put at 13's. Actually had Charles Howe walk off on #13 because he would not of made the qualifying score.

My point is that every course is different and that should be taken into consideration. 12's and 13's are competition style speeds and not something I would want to try to provide on a daily basis. but that's just me.

Me neither, but the point is that it can be done
