How many of you use a gate, two posts marking where to enter/exit a fairway?

    Is it successful?
How did you communicate to golfers to use them?
    Anything to lookout for?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Andy, My first thought is traffic wear.

I do not use an entry point. But I do use a yellow rope laying on the ground attached to 2 green stakes. Do not cross the yellow rope. Turn to the cart path. Sounds crazy, but it works way better than signs.

We use movable ballard stakes so we can vary the exit points to manage traffic. It has worked out well for us.

Semi Private near here tried the gates at on and off points moving them almost daily. Members were pretty good but daily fees...need I say more. New Supt. and gates disappeared. I personally like the white painted line some where in front of the green.

We use the gates, and actually a rope on the ground across the approach. We probably get 80-90% compliance after several years of use, now that everyone understands the system. It works well for us as long as you move them every day. It has improved the wear in traffic areas for us

Thanks for the responses. Seems everyone I have talked to said they have worked to some degree, but communication initially and to daily fee play has been a struggle.

My main concern is it will direct traffic to one spot. Even if we move them daily, that's over 100 carts a day driving in the same spot every few weeks. I can see this being worse that if they just scattered initially.

    Andy,

The fairway gates work to a degree and communication with the golfers is vital. We have a sample gate at the starter station, which is part of the pre-round rules the starter communicates to the golfers as they begin their round. I would guess a little over 50% of the golfers pay attention to and follow the fairway gates. My theory is 50% is better than what we had prior to the gate system particularly if you have a heavy number of rounds.

We move the gates daily to distribute wear. The time required to move the gates for rotation, for mowing, spraying, etc can be a hassle. The staff does not like it and quite honestly neither do I but the save on wear is worth the effort, IMO.

    Great ideas,

Funny that at many of your places the members are good and daily play isn't. Of course we are municipal, but I see better cart behavior from our non-regulars.
