I know this is kind of vague, but is there any data on the game growing at all? We are coming off of our worst year ever since 1997. Other area courses are in the same boat. I know last year's bad weather plus time and expense for golfers. But does anyone really see a way to get more golfers on our courses?

After 1997-2001 adding new tees to make the course longer...go figure. This year's attempt is to add shorter tees (which I agree with) 4K yard range to attract more beginners and the seniors that just can't hit the ball as far as they used to. I just think back to when I started to golf and my brother-in-law said we should play from the white instead of the blue since I was just starting out. What guy will ever start their friend from the "just beginning" tees to give them a chance to enjoy the game and have a shot at a par or two?

With the area decline in golfers, a couple of more years I will be looking at a very nice vacant lot.

I think the industry had seen an increase in 2012 compared to previous years. However, this was mostly traced back to decent weather in all parts of the country. 2013 showed a slide in the wrong direction due to poor weather and I have a feeling that 2014 will turn out even worse.

We are actually starting on construction on a forward set of tees on one of our courses starting here in about another month. The idea is just as you mentioned - provide a fun, playable course that will allow beginners to not feel frightened and to provide a short course to keep our aging membership around longer. With a minimal investment - were talking 11 new tees and 2 expanded - we are hoping we can increase rounds played while also maintaining memberships.

People used to play golf. They played at courses where they knew the weather was likely to be bad. They have played the Sally Ladies Golf Tournament in January since 1926 in Daytona Beach. http://www.occ1907.com/sally The weather is always horrible and the golf is always wonderful.
