Having issues with a GM3150 cutting out and dying when we mow with it. It's a strange issue and had it at our local supplier and they couldn't get it resolved. I can have the engine run at an idle, half throttle or full throttle while it's stationary all day and it never cuts out or quits running. But once it's warmed up and we go to mow it will cut out and the engine quits. It will run if we don't mow and try to get it back to the shop but you can only drive it about 20 feet and it cuts out and quits running. If we let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes it will run until we try to mow with it. Checked the fuel solenoid, replaced the regulator (thinking it was getting hot), replaced spark plugs and filters with no luck. Frustrating for me, any ideas?

    Hello Dan:

We have a GM3100 that was doing close to the same thing a couple years ago. We would sent it out and it would cut out and shut off around the 14th or 15th hole. Let it sit for a 10-15 minutes or so, the it would fire back up. Sometimes it would make it to the shop, but most of the time it would only drive 30 yards or so, similar to yours.

This was an older unit and it turned out that our problem was debris in the fuel tank. I suspect it would cut out and shut off at almost the exact point every time was due to the level of fuel dropping in the tank to a point where the debris would "slosh around" and clog the fuel line. Sometimes, I suspect it would only partially clog the line which is why it would fire up after a few minutes (the fuel would trickle through the fuel line to the filter) but still shut back off (not enough fuel getting through the fuel line to sustain a continuous run).

Anyway, thoroughly cleaning and flushing the fuel tank did the trick for us. Hasn't shown this problem for two years now. i know it's probably a long shot that this is the same problem as your GM3150, but your description seemed so similar that i wanted at least to reply.

    Steve

Seems to me some of the older mowers had the muffler near the electric ignition box causing a simular problem.

Drain the gas tank and check inside of it. I've actually had an acorn cause an issue once. Would float to the top once it killed the engine and then made its way back down to block passage once running for a bit. Could be electrical issues also. Something grounding when it shouldn't be. IIRC the muffler is near quite a bit of it too.

Park brake proximity switch. Was my issue. Mower worked fine then 6 holes in it would cut in and out or stop completely. Move a few feet then quit. Somedays it would run for the full time it was running and mowing.

Unit was stalling out (RPMs dropping significantly) as cutting units dropped and engaged then would recover to normal rpms as unit moved forward in the pass. Unit also had a blown side cover gasket, replaced gasket and continued to operate with same issue. Checked that both coils were functioning normally, set air gap, tested diode wire all checked out fine. Checked valve clearance, within spec. Was going to rebuild carb but at bosses insistence purchased a new carb ~$550, installed and check governor settings and it is running like a top again.

    Good luck

We had a similar issue with our 3150, We found that the fuel line was was too close to hot engine components. As a short term fix, we wrapped the fuel lines with aluminum foil and it fixed the problem. Our permanent solution was a heat shield tape that I found on a google search. It hasn't been a problem since.

Had a 3100 acting up today. Mower would run and then quit at times. Turned out the fuel pump was bad.
