My club is settled in a family oriented town. People do alot togather, but not everyone golfs. We are looking for ways to expand our membership to make it a family enviroment. We used to have a pool 10 years ago and then it was filled with rocks and concreted over. Some of the best years of this place were when they had the pool. It was done away with due to poor conditions and the GM at the time just flat out didnt want it. Anyway I am looking to see if any of you all have pools at your facility. Do they add to the experience? Would it drive us to gain an advantage if we wanted to up our social membership? Financially does it sustain it self? What are the annual inputs for mainitaing it financially? The bebefit to the food and beverage department? We are looking to get one that runs about 5 ft deep in order to save on needing lifeguards(i believe its 5 ft max we can do to not need them). Any help would be appreciated here, I am looking hard at what we need to do to get this back to a true family place to be. Thanks

Pools are typically a money pit at clubs. Here we are in the red a significant amount for the pool but it is kept up so that we can offer the "full country club experience." They are a giant maintenance nightmare.

As an alternative, consider installing a waterpark/splash pad area that is family friendly and could accomodate ages 1-12. They are very popular down here and get more traffic than the pool facilities. They would also not require a lifeguard.

I have found that pools cost our club at least $35,000 per year with no real gain in membership.I feel if we could use that money to improve golf conditions we would gain more members for golf.

Pools tend to be big losers but like mentioned are part of the whole package. Ours is open for 3 months out of the year but is a headache for at least 8-9 months. I've always wondered if there was a way to utilize that real estate during the down months to generate revenue...??? rather than being a one season park, how about 3 season. Possibly hold events / parties/ etc? Curious if anyone out there does?

Like everyone has said a pool is a money pit!

Twice in the last 6 years we have made money off of our pool but once was when we hosted the annual swim invitational which netted us about $14,000 and was run by volunteers. the other time was when we had most of the chemicals donated, they said we made $1,500 but we also had a very high number of summer pool members that year.

I like the idea of a water park, seems like less upkeep.

The maintenance on a pool can be a nightmare. down here around the New Orleans Area you cannot empty a pool out for any longer then a few days without the water pressure popping it out of the ground. about every three years we have to empty it completely pressure wash it and then refill it. about every five years we have to paint it which involves acid etching it after pressure washing it. If we did not do these things in house with my crew we would have filled in our pool years ago. You have to have someone on hand every day to test the water and apply chemiclas. If not properly done you will be in for big trouble.

If your club is like mine we always have volunteers ready to tidy up the pool before the season starts, but funny how they disapear after it opens and expect my crew to maintain their work. I advise you to steer clear of the swimming pool business unless you plan on doing a lot of the work yourself (since you seem to be pushing it).

I do not like the idea of having a 5' deep pool so you do not need a lifeguard. As a club you should feel it is your responsibility to make sure everyone is safe and for that, someone has to watch the pool at all times. a large percentage of injuries from pools come from people diving in and breaking their neck on the bottom of the pool.

To be honest we spend about $50,000 per year in running the pool. that is the cost of chemicals, labor to help keep it up, and the lifeguards and snack shack help. We bring in about $26,000 from our summer memberships and our members has to flip the bill for the rest.

I would imagine that we may have 75 members that are members because they can offer the pool use to their families as well as golf.

While we may have more life guards then your normal pool we save a lot of dollars because one of our board members does most of the testing and even cleaning of the pool in the down months.

I went to the Players at Sawgrass this year. They have a replica of #17 in a swimming pool. Probably a 50' chip to a floating green. Great stuff. Probaby 200 people waiting in line for 3 chances. We pay $350/yr for a nice neighborhood pool. That's not even one months dues at nearby clubs. Pools are the ultimate "loss leader" in the club business. Kenneth Ingram, UMD.

We also offer the full Country Club experience. We recently hired a Aquatics director to operate and maintain this department. Also added heaters so that the pool can be used year round. Our director has swim programs for adults that has seemed to do well. He is also the Swim Coach for a local girls high school, whom we host for practice and meets. They pay for the use of the pool plus bring in revenue at the swim meets. These events are usually when the pool is not being utilized by the members so it helps. We have a swim team consisting of kids from age 6-18. Approximately 40-50 kids, this program has been around since the beginning of the club. They operate on their own with the help of volunteers. We host a number of meets for this area and give us a chance to showcase our club. With all this we still operate in the red but it does give us the opportunity to add another service to our club.

With golf struggling to gain more players and private clubs struggling to gain new members the industry has started to focus on the "family" experience. The pool plays a big part in this new "family" membership drive to get the family to come to the club. Many clubs in our area have spent nearly $1 million dollars on a complete and total pool renovation which not only included a lap pool but also a play pool with a slide and a splash park. These renovations have been a big hit with the membership especially those with kids. Will they recover the million dollar expense? Tough question to answer right now but these clubs have something to offer that other clubs do not. Clubs must continue to find ways to bring the entire family into the club. It is not about dad joining a club to get away for a few hours to be with his buddies. I would not recommend a club doing a pool if it is going to put them into bankruptcy but if a club has the funds to improve the facility and wants to drive memberships the pool experience should be something to strongly consider.

let us know what you decide and why if you do not mind. One thing I always see is members asking questions on here but rarely do we hear their choices and reasons. I do not ask this to be able to argue your choice but rather as a means for others to see different reasonings. It could help another Superintendent down the road.

In our 10 or 11 years of having a pool it has never made money. Maintenance is constant and more so as it ages. Ours is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Finding enough lifeguards is also a headache. Most find sitting under an umbrella on a lifeguard stand to be really hard and taxing work. Our facility is first class and under utilized. If you could have a "do over" the hole would not be dug the second time.

We do use ours some, but not enough in my opinion in the summer for some nighttime adult only parties with luau themes etc......they do fairly well.
