    Good afternoon Turfers,

I have recently had brief discussions on the concept of including a PGR within the snow mold fungicide spray. One discussion involved test applications of Paclobutrazol (Trimmit) along with snow mold applications. Bent was a little ugly in spring, but recovered and Poa was hurt/smoked. A second discussion involved snow mold fungicides PLUS Trinexapac-etheyl (Primo) resulting in much improved spring density of turf.

Is anyone including PGRs along with winter snow mold applications? Would you please share your experiences and the benefit you are seeing?

    Thanks in advance

A little different angle but I am hearing research to include an app of proxy with your snow mold application to expand the time window for your first proxy app in the spring for seedhead prevention of Poa.

Having T1 greens that like to wake up a little later here in the transition zone any help of expanding that window would be great, but have not heard a lot of people trying it. Has anyone seen any success with it???

    Dustin,

So did you decide if you are going to try anything. After reading this, I am thinking about mixing a tank a little strong and adding Trimmit and Primo to the remainder for our nursery (at least one pass), and also a few other test plots on fairways and tees that are easy to monitor. Curious as to what you were thinking after posting this and getting few responses.

    Kyle,

I have shared discussions with several Northern Superintendents. Rates have ranged from 8 oz- 16oz/A on greens, tees or fwys. In a nutshell, frost is not an issue and does not interrupt their applications. They have not seen any negative effects on the bentgrass. The Poa will definitely be regulated well to spring.

I'm not 100% comfortable to treat all bentgrass areas until I can test. My current plan is to apply a 16 oz/A rate Paclo next week to an area that we plan on renovating in the spring anyways. This test should provide me with an aggressive look. A second location will get both 8 oz/A Paclo + 4oz/A T-Nex and will hopefully test the density observations mentioned by some.

We should get a good number of frosts immediately following this application. I can then observe any ill effects. If all is clear...then I can consider further applications.

I have been adding 6oz./acre of pac to my snow mold app for years to my bentgrass. I believe it not only promotes dormancy but also helps prevent breaking of dormancy with a winter thaw. Also shuts down or dings the poa giving the bent a jump in the Spring. Have used higher rates up to 16 oz./acre and have never lost bent grass but it can look a little scary in the Spring. Had the bent turn black under ice cover once but it did recover. Since then I have done the more conservative 6oz rate with good results.

If I could hijack the thread a bit has anyone used Turfscreen in their winter mix. Our local rep. has been promoting 1.5oz/m as an aide to winter survival.

    Thanks Scott,

    A few followup questions...
    1. Were you an avid Paclo user prior to including it within your snow mold application
    2. How long did it take the bentgrass to kick out and recover?

Yes I have used Paclo for a long time. Hardly noticeable at 6oz rate. Late April/Early May in our area with the heavier rate.
