Looking for feedback on depths for vertical mowing. I'm not sure where I want to be. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

We go 1/8" all the time when weather permits. We will stop in the summer when it's hot. Nothing scientific, such as it's spring maybe we should be a little aggresive? We will if needed, and time permits go 2 different directions that week.

Depends on the area and the thatch level. 1/8" depth might be great for greens but could just be a grooming for fairways. The blade type also affects your depth; if you are using carbide tip dyna-blades you don't need to bench set them as deep as standard vertical mowing blades because they dig down and stay down and don't ride on the surface.

We seem to be pretty aggressive. Not sure the actual depth but we placed wood yard sticks under the rollers then adjusted the blades to touch the work bench. We pull up a lot of material with the baskets being full after each green, followed by the sand units of which the baskets are full after each green, followed by the blower to finish removing debris. We then topdress immediately after the clean up. Our Pennlinks on USGA root zone mix love it.

as far as greens go, I've come to find that if we v-cut the negative depth of our mowing height (.125 on mowers, -.125 on verticutters), we seem be pretty good. I"ve always felt that if we are tickling to a depth where we are getting the occassional sand granule, we've done our job. Like some others, we collect the v-cut clippings, mow with baskets, topdress and drag, and they are back in play. Every 2 weeks from May 1 or so till september 15th ish.
