My son spent two years killing Taliban face-to-face. He left the Army with PTSD, TBI and a drug problem. He is in jail now. My great-grandfather came to this country from Sweden. It has been a rugged 5-6 years, and I have had to wonder whether he made the right choice.

It is amazing what they can turn your kid into. They made him a highly trained expert in killing and now they wouldn't trust him with a sharpened tooth brush. I am a little angry.

That's too bad Scott. I hope things turn around for your son soon. I am glad there are those that do what has to be done but the toll of killing anything, let alone a human being, can only put a troubling long term mental imprint on the conscience.

He was a Combat Team Leader. He had three combat teams and stayed awake for days keeping them busy. He lost a bunch of guys and had many more shot to hell. He stuck tampons in bullet holes, and stuffed and wrapped necks with gauze from bullet wounds. Very close friends died instantly. He sat in the open and loaded a mortar while he heard the bullets tear through his soldiers. I am not sure how I can expect him to be normal. I am changed.

    Scott,

You know I support you 100% and have sent your son letters myself! It is and has been a tough time in our world today Afghanistan, Iraq, has brought many of us back to the Vietnam war thought process wondering why we are there! I support you and your sons effort, he did what he thought was right and correct no matter what! He was doing his job! My good friend was wounded in Vietnam, a Navy Seal doing things to this day America says we did not do! Mr Nixon swore we were not in Laos, Cambodia, my friend was killing Vietnam officers and was wounded there! Your son did his job, and now is paying the high price of what war can do to a young man! I do pray every Sabbath for him and others doing what they feel is correct. We vote for President and leaders to make proper choices of what to do and when to do it, our boys/girls must pay the price! Your son is one of them for sure! A sad day and I hope soon he will be released and come home to you, be a better man one day recovered from the price he paid to serve his country proudly! Shama Yisrael Adonoi Elohano Adonoi Echod! Amen. May god bless your son, bring him a speedy recovery, return to normality, life of peace, love, and harmony!

    Gregg R.

There have been great advances in trauma treatment (PTSD, etc).
Your son will be who he is for the rest of his life but he does not have to be what he experienced.
My wife has done some great work helping those that have gone through some unimaginable traumatic experiences.
I pray that all of our warriors find the proper help to recover from whatever they experienced while in service.
My heart goes out to you.

Happy "237th Birthday.......Oooorah. Had a great group of guys get together yesterday, representing a span of WWII thru Afghanistan to share war stories, some birthday cake, a few cold beers and some football games on TV. A great day indeed and my son drove in from Houston and got to share in it for the first time. Driving home is said "Dad that quite a group you have there". Yes it is but unfortunately it is only getting smaller.

(A note from my son written about six months ago. I edited it to create a PG version.)

I had someone thank me for my service yesterday, and for the first time it upset me. The military used to fight for your freedom, WW1, WW2, Korea. I just finished my 2nd Infantry deployment in Afghanistan. It has gotten worse over there, because you replace a bunch of trained Air Assault Soldiers from the 101st who train everyday all year physically. They run through scenario after scenario, until fighting is instinct, its natural and believe me we still had every inch of ground contested. We risked our lives, did as we're told while certain commanders hid for their lives. I'm "OK" with that, but don't replace them with some National Guard unit who trains ONCE A MONTH, AND DOESN'T TRAIN WITH ANY GEAR!! TRAIN AS YOU FIGHT!!! Now all the ground the 101st blood, sweat and shed tears to get is given right back to the TALIBAN. Does that sound like a war or winnable game plan???? THATS NOT SPECULATION I've seen it happen over there with my own eyes twice, AND IT MAKES ME MAD. I had a good friend, great man PFC Arturo Rodriguez who fought bravely and got killed for a hilltop that means nothing to any politician that got these brave men in this fight. Then the Army had the nerve to deny his parents the life insurance policy they okayed beforehand and he paid into because they ARE MEXICAN citizens. They take some poor brave "MEXICAN'S" money that gave his life for this country, and then not honor the deal. In mine and any other true loyal American's mind, The Rodriguez's are more American then the politicians that got us in this mess. george w, dick cheney! The closest these people got to being half the man Arturo Rodriguez was is when cheney shot his friend on a hunting trip. (Side note from Dad: I learned that if you shot one of your own soldiers they called that, "Pulling a Cheney".)

What about Iraq? Now that was genius! Take out the only military power that can check our sworn and soon to be NUCLEAR enemy. Genius!! You know what? I'm sure you guys could make a killing just selling nukes to Iran. That's the only way you could have made it easier. Look I love most of our REAL soldiers that are over there, but politics has no place in the war. You see politicians get us half baked into a war then sit back and get filthy rich off it. That's when there is a problem in my eyes. The saddest part is most guys in the Military are too brainwashed in being macho, that they loved Ga..Ga..Ga..george w because he put some $$ in the military. Look at the big picture? Was his best interest in America or himself? I've been to Afghanistan twice and killed people there that prior to them engaging me I had no problem with. Never once did I engage Osama or any of his 9/11 conspirators. I've met plenty of good Afghans. If someone invaded us would you not take up arms? I have no problem doing this country's dirty work but not for the politicians to get rich while the fighters are making peanuts. If I have to watch my friends get maimed, killed and mentally damaged, I'm not going to do it in vain. Lets have an end game, a standard for military combat units. Its a slap in our face to turn over a year's of hard fighting to a unit that you know is going to sit on the base and not do the at least the bare minimum to keep it. We don't fight for freedom or our way of life there, we fight for the guy next to us. If you disagree, please tell me what uniformed military could have stopped 9/11 or will ever stop a future one? All politicians are liars and crooks the Republicans are just a little better at it.

If you had taken over for Bush 43 would you have immediately, unilaterally withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan?
That would have been irresponsible and stupid, so I am guessing "yes".

You have a keen ability of going off the reservation. We were discussing the armed forces decision to replace trained personnel with the national guard. Somehow you morphed into an immediate withdraw and insults. What would you like to discuss next?

This is a very cool response. I was told that I was intellectually gifted when I was ten years old. They made me go to a special school. I hated it and told them I cheated on the test to get in. They called in my parents and I heard them all laugh when the the school master told them that cheating to get in was impossible. I expected to do well in life because of this outcome. I did not recognize that you could have intellectual gifts and still have weaknesses in other areas. (I know Clay and Dick will jump all over that.) Well I am extremely adequate when it comes to book learning, studying and test taking. My weaknesses are very well known to anyone who has spent any time on this forum.

I could re-size the avatar to make it fit here, but thought that it should fit without the extra effort.

FYI - I am tired of fighting with David, Clay and Dick. I am not going to back off. If this is fun for you so be it. If you step back a little I will step back a lot. If not, we'll continue to play.

I'm so sorry about your Son Sir. It truly breaks my heart. We owe them every thing we can give them (Free of charge). It's a shame that a prisoner can receive better treatment than a TRUE soldier that sacrifices not only his body....but his mind too.
I pray for lots of people including Son's and Daughter's of the Military

I was attending the San Diego State Aztec game against Air Force Saturday and saw some pretty cool things. It started with a fly over by jets and got better as the day went on. The scoreboard repeatedly had messages from Marines mostly in Afghanistan wishing the Marines a happy birthday and cheering for the Aztecs. The most inspiring part of the day was when three Marines were brought out on the field to be recognized. They were all multiple medal winners including too many purple hearts. The entire crowd stood and gave a 5 minute standing ovation. It actually delayed the game for a couple of minutes but both teams and the refs were clapping as well, so nobody cared. People do truly love our people in uniform and are not shy about showing it. Aztecs went on to win the game 28 to 9 but after the game players all went over to the Air Force team where a lot of hugs and hand shakes took place. It was uplifting to see the positive support this time around. It certainly didn't happen when David and many other fine Americans returned home to a very different U.S. in the late 60's and early 70's.

That's nice to hear Sandy. And glad the Aztexs won as well. Yes things have changed in regards to the attitude of the American military since the 70's for sure. Sure there are pockets (S.F.) that still dispise the military but for the most part they support the soldiers, seaman, airmen and Marines. I like everyone is happy to see the war in Afghanistan wind down. They as a nation do not seem to appreciate what we have attempted to do for them so let them do it on their own. Just finished my third or fourth book on the war in Afghanistan and just down loaded a new one last night to the kindle. Some great stories of bravery and sacrifice by out best and brightest

Have you read Lost in Kandahar?

You know the only person who even acknowledged Veterans day to me was another vet.
I dont think thats hugely important, but our country has largely lost touch with the kind of sacrifices
that are involved in military life. I know its an unpopular view, but i think the Israeli model of universal service has a lot going for it just on the basis of a population with a shared experience and shared sacrifice.

    Steve,

Things are bad but the USA is not nearly as in peril as Israel. Universal service would be very expensive, and a waste of resources.

We vote for Presidents who have the information to decide where to put our military resources. There is no question that after 11 straight years of war our military must be bloated. On the other hand we have some of the most experienced, best equipped solders in the world. We are indeed lucky to have so many men and women stand in the gap for us. We owe them a debt. I am afraid pictures of our generals flying around in private jets with girl friends is only making things worse. I appreciate our veterans thank you for your service.

Sacrifice? The whole concept is lost in America at every level, Rich, Poor and Middle Class. Its mostly about everybody else needing to sacrifice. It's getting embarrassing.

I'm going to look for the book recommendation.

    Thanks,

    Sean

That's because your not facebook friends with me. I think a lot of people used social media this past veterans day to express their support. Also sometimes unless we see a hat or something, we don't always know who a vet is to express our gratitude. Of course I am remiss for not saying anything here on the forums. Thanks all for your service. Scott hopefully your son gets the help he needs. And Sean is right we all need to sacrifice, I'm willing to pay more in taxes if it means not cutting any support for our veterans.

    Scott,
I'm very sorry to hear of your son. It is unfortunate and unfair how some of our veterans are returned to society. My wife is a veteran herself, two tours in Iraq but she always jokes that that is the benefit of a four year degree from West Point. In the almost 4 years we've been together I've learned a little about what it is like but I'm sure I'll never fully know, just as I've never really been told about Vietnam by my dad, I just know that at times I look at him and know it isn't good thoughts in his head. My wife pushes on and seems to be fine but we often get news of classmates of hers being killed in battle, just recently a father of year old twin girls. When that news comes across I see the glaze that goes over her eyes and I just don't know what to say or how to react but you can tell they we trained for such a thing. Nobody that has ever been a part of such a thing will never be able to understand how such a thing can affect a person. A few years back we were invited to a prescreening for an HBO special called "Wartorn". This documentary opened my eyes, not only to what takes place in war, but more about the war all these soldiers fight when they return. It opened my eyes and my relationship with my father to where I now drive the 2.5 hours back to my hometown every veterans day to go to the high school assembly with him and cry with him. Your son is so correct in his letter and I truly hope that time will help peace come to his mind. I thank him greatly for his service!
Even though all these men and woman choose to join the armed forces they never choose to go to war or kill some one, they are ordered. They all deserve our respect and support for that choice to if needed stand up and protect us from others, even if you aren't in support of the war.
