I'm looking to purchase an off lease John Deere 1600 turbo wide area mower and am looking for pros and cons regarding dependability and quality of cut. I only have experience with Jake and Toro units. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Tom

We've had terrible luck with two 1600's after their third year, machine starts eating hydraulic hoses, all of them. Attributed to hydraulic pump overheating. I'd want complete service history and anything else you can find out and then demo, demo, demo

We have had terrible luck with our 1600's, we purchased 3 units, one for each of our golf courses. Each one was purchased in October of 2010, ours has 3900 hours on it. Most of our problems have been hydraulic pumps, hydrostat with leaks, axle seals rusted through, and other various issues. Each one of our units have been back to the dealers to fix the issues (at least 3 times for each machine). Engines and bodies have to be removed to get to most of the problems. The dealer that sold them to us (non golf, we are a municipality so they could sell us rotary mowers), I believe refused to fix it the last time or with the issues we had, we tried a different dealer. When they do go back to the dealer, they have them at least 2 to 3 weeks at a time if not longer.

We are currently in the process of switching them out, one per year, even though we have older equipment that needs to be replaced as well.

Also the things are fuel hogs. We will go through on average, 2.2 or 2.3 gallons per hour. We have a Jac 5111 that is 16 years old with 6700 hours which only burns 1.8 gallons per hour.

The belts have been solid and our hoses have just had the normal wear as our other equipment.

    Tom,

We just got a new 4000-D from Toro and thrilled with it. We have 2 older 4000's and this thing runs circles around them; all the changes to the machine were great! Decks are redesigned and disperse clipping better and scalp less, I had it up on some green and tee banks playing catch up with very minimal scalping.
