I need to replace a worn down Toro 4500-D this year. I had one of the first Ransome AR250's back in the day. It had its fair share of problems. I have gone with the 4500 after that. I'm sure the AR-522 is much better than the AR250 that I had. The Toro still seems like a much more solid machine. We demoed the AR-522 last fall and my operators liked it. Which mower do you guys prefer (my service is about the same with each dealer)? How many hours would you expect to get out of each machine(more from one or another)?

    Thank You

Just bought 2 4500's after a demo of all available. slightly wider, more respect for Toro. Half of my decision came from my mechanic and we just have much more respect for red. I have a whole shed full of orange. but not for long....

Toro no question. Less hoses, solid runs for hydraulics under the unit, had an AR-5 in the past and went through hoses and bearings way too often!!!

Posted this on the talking turf forum and didn't get much response. Any thoughts would be helpful. I need to replace a worn down Toro 4500-D this year. Kerry who is your Jac dealer? I don't remember very good service back when I left out there except from Toledo Turf. Of course that was when Jac and Ransome merged. Hope it doesn't mean Toro service has gone down hill out there?

Whatever you do don't get a John Deere 1600T, the thing is a fuel hog, well over 2 gallons per hour, even in the dry summer.

Midwest Golf and Turf is our dealer now. Toro service is good but not as good as it used to be.

There is NO comparison. The Toro will out mow , out last , and not leave you in the dumps. Have had both and the AR522 is the worst machine Jac ever designed and they know it. You run it for 8 and work on it for 8, Almost spent as much in repairs on the AR as I did for the purchase price.

Re you looking for a mower that can handle contours very well? Do you really care if it stripes or not?

I went through this same purchase issue last season and went away from a dedicated mower. We demoed the Toro 4500, the JD 8800, jac couldn't get one here. I preferred the clipping dispersal of the 8800, along with the ease if height of adjustment, and operators enjoyed the ride more. The JD was plenty powerful in the 45 horse class, and the Toro seemed to like the fuel and was plainly oversized it seemed.

All in all, they performed very similarily, but in the end, I went another route. Thinking in the best interest of our club, we looked at a traction unit from JD or Toro that could support a 100" Lastec deck. This traction unit also gave me the flexibility to use it for snow removal in the winter (attach a blower or broom), as well as assisting in cleanup with the broom attachment. 5 minutes and you have a different implement. Cab kits available, etc. I also prefer the Non-striped look after a mow. All those lines between fairway units, greens units, tee mowers, can make a property seem dizzying.

Kyle, what traction unit did you go with?

At another course about 12 years ago we went the route Kyle did. We put the lastec deck on a John Deere 1145. It cut great, the only complaint was with such a heavy deck and I think I noticed the castor wheels didn't really help turn it easily the 1145 would track going around trees, once we took over campus grounds, we would use their JD945's to ring trees and all three units would mow campus in a more timely fashion.

    Roland,

We went with the JD 1565. I like it. Plenty of Power, and the deck really doesn't take much HP to get things going. Toro simply didn't want to work with us on one of these setups, otherwise I might have gone red. We changed some things around this weekend in preperation for more snow, cart path cleanups. 10 Minutes and I had the mower deck off, the broom on, and greased. If I have one complaint, its the gear selectors on this unit. Sort of chincy in my mind. But, they work. I simply put the 4wd in assist rather than locked in, and we are going to go at it. Need to add balast weights to the back end, that deck is HEAVY.

Thanks for the info. I was not aware of the 1564/lastec option.

    Roland,

Go to Lastec's website and you'll find the traction units and decks on a video, youtube style I believe. Was pretty convincing.

I'm not great with posting links, this is best I could do cut and paste style.
