We just changed out a cracked head on our workman sprayer. Had to call our toro dealer to get torque specs and he came back with 25 lbs and 35 lbs . These seemed so low but we put the valve springs on with just our thumbs so we went with it after about three hours run time with 200 gallon sprayer in low range with fairly high rpm we blew a head Gasquet. Anyone have experience with workman diesel heads?

I would look at engine mfg service book for the specs on that engine. Most mfg, want you to use new hardware
when you remove heads from engine, if you didn't they may have not held torque.

Tech support suggested may not be blown head gasket that diahatsu has to be burped may be air trapped between Cylanders. We will see I hope that is all it is. Radiator is pressurized bubbling yet as cold as can be.

Well we have pretty much removed all doubt the motor is blown now. After a $2000 head and a$700 radiator even a $69 thermostat ,It was a diahatsu/ Briggs diesel 15 years old it is time to stop the bleeding. We ar going to try to switch the sprayer over to another 15 year old workman with a different motor. I will then have a workman still looking in good shape with the need to get a new power source and I would like to try a different power source. If anyone out there has suggestions or opinions I would love to hear them. Our current sprayer is a 200 gallon skid mount toro with Rogers covered booms. I wouldn't mind trade in on used , or trades for sprayer, or re power with different motor. People who have done some of this with do's or don'ts or even good or bad story's. We do have a big old 5020 ditch witch with back hoe and blade we are looking to trade too.

This was talked about once before here. Apparently there is a common problem with Briggs Diatsu Diesels and cracked heads. Check with Re power Specialists to see if a Kubota replacement engine might work.

There is a lot of "talk" on the net abut people not being happy with their Briggs Diatsu in various equipment. It may be just talk however I keep a close eye on my workmans and will advise against anything with this motor in the future.

    Thanks Sean,
We bought two back in 2004 , one had side mount radiator and skid mount sprayer other front mount radiator used as dump vehicle both with same motor. Dump vehicle has been great but the spray vehicle has always been a bit weaker maybe due to heavy loads maybe weak vehicle. Board is ready to get a used dedicated sprayer at $15,000 but we really could use that money better on other things so I am mounting the sprayer on ther workman. Kinda like what James was talking about making decisions more along survival of the club rather than what I would really like to do. A new dedicated sprayer or new utility vehicle with easier slide off change over capabilitys . The one I have has a 200 gallon spray tank which feels heavy when full. In hindsight we could of only filled it partially may have done better. We are a big hilly golf course where a flatter course might have been easier on the unit. Now we are switching it over changing pto ,wiring , ect but it is amazing how hard it is to say only half fill it. Then train others to only half fill it and is this really the problem. Question being is the load too heavy , motor too weak, unit too old or was the unit operated when something was wrong with cooling system. I was retired five or six years and did not get to watch what was happening. Now trying to train someone to take over and working on how to decide best sprayer options.
