After 38 years in the golf business today is my first official day as a retired City employee. While this ends one phase of my career my plans include to continue to work with our youth program in Oakland (OTEI) and to stay involved with my local chapter and GCSAA however I can. The best part of this business is the many friendships I have managed to gain over the years. I don't think most people will ever understand how supportive superintendents are of each other and always willing to help others be successful. Thanks to all who have supported me in so many different ways throughout my career. This isn't the end, just a new beginning. Take care all.

Congratulations Gary. I hope to see you even more often now.

If I knew it would have brought rain to Northern California I'd have asked you to retire a long time ago. :)

    Thanks Pete,

If I knew it was going to start raining when I retired I would have kept working! :D

Congrats, Gary! It is great that you already have a new path laid out for yourself. While I still have another 15 years to go I too have already started thinking about beyound the course. I am currently thinking about possibly working for Habitat for Humanity! I love building and it would allow me to help others in need with what God gave me to work with. I just hope we still have a Humanity left when I finally get there!

    Good Luck

    James,

Always a great feeling to be able to help others whenever or however we can.

While at times I wonder about what the future holds for many of our youth every time we have a "study tour" with the kids we work with I see some bright hopes for many of them. All we try to do is offer them exposure to alternative opportunities for future careers and encourage them to pursue education whenever they can to help them achieve their future goals. Nothing feels better than to see that moment on one of their faces that kind of says they get it.

Let's hope they all get the chance for a better life down the road. I think work with things like Habitat for Humanity will provide you with a similar feeling in the years ahead. Take care.

    Congrats Gary!

Glad to hear about your hope in today's youth. I have noticed it to being a parent helper for our high school band. I have no fear about our future as long as we don't make to much of a mess for them.

Congrats Gary retiring from our business is a real achievement. I think the GCM magazine should spotlight some guys like yourself who were able to survive the onslaught of selfish GM's and unrealistic memberships. Enjoy your "golden years" my friend

    Thanks Sean and Sandy,

Got my first retirement payment today and looking forward to getting many more. Probably more than a small portion of those funds will be "invested" in the local gaming establishments so quite possible I may be stopping by at some point. Still love working with the kids in our OTEI program and that will keep me busy. Hope you guys get the same opportunity to retire soon if that is in your plans.

    Thanks Patrick,

While everything wasn't exactly as I had hoped it would be leading up to my retirement it was nice to be able to leave and know that I had what I thought was a pretty good career over the last 37 years. I got to know and meet so many great people throughout the world of golf and that was pretty special. Sad to see so many leave this tough business without getting just rewards for all the hard work so many put in for the benefit of their members and employers. Can't even remember how many nights, weekends or holidays I spent at work over the course of my career because it felt like what I had to do to protect course conditions for our customers.

Even more special for me was having the opportunity to develop a loyal staff over the years who have been able to give their families some stability because of their positions as City employees. Nice to be able to reward their hard work and all the support they gave me these last 15 years. They'll always be among my best friends.

Hope more guys get to enjoy this same experience in the years ahead.

Gary, my current goal is to retire the September after I turn 72. Preparing financially to live to be 100 so need the finances. Hopefully I will remain as healthy and youthful as I am now but I can only control my end of it! Still won't retire to doing nothing because that is a death sentence. I will also find something to enjoy yet be involved but just won't have the daily grind. The scary part and I know you probably went through this before you made your final decision is that date is now less than 4 years away! I have never known not working! Will have to learn so much before I actually give it up. Let me know when you may come down.

    Sandy,

Many folks told me that you will know when it is time. In my case I actually had planned to try and retire when I was 55 because my wife who was a little older had already retired after 31 years with Lockheed and we had managed to make some pretty good financial investments that put us in a good place. With resources being constantly cut the last few years I kind of hung around to make sure my staff was in a good place and secure in their jobs. It got extremely difficult the last couple of years and because of a few previous health issues I really didn't want to stress about things I could no longer control at work. The crew knew I was kind of hanging around for them but could see that it was getting harder to keep a positive outlook for me.

After a particularly bad meeting with the higher ups one day I was just kind of down on the whole thing. I was sitting in my office and our foreman who I have known for thirty years walked into my office, took one look at me, and said, "just do what you have to do". I knew it was time to go and I wrote up my resignation that afternoon. Glad I made the decision when I did.

I'll let you know when we get down that way again and I'll be sure to bring my clubs. Take care my friend.

    Thanks Jay,

I'll need you to either move the course a little closer to the South Bay or provide me with a driver!!!
Perhaps we can discuss next Wednesday at the annual meeting? Spent several days in Colorado over the Holidays polishing up my snow shoveling skills so I know that I would prefer fairway mowing to that task!!

    Take care.
