what methods do you use to mark the spray width of your spray hawk to avoid excessive overlap and/or missed areas when spraying? thanks in advance for any sage wisdom shared.

    Mark,

When we spray hawk we use the green pigment foursome from qualipro. We will apply it at 10 oz/A and if we have signature in the tank we will cut the rate to 6 oz/A.

    Good luck,

thanks for your input, tom. using a color based indicator is an obvious solution. i didn't want to paint my greens every time i spray and was looking for other solutions. i should have stated that. thank you.

You could drag a chain from each side of the boom.
You could have another man flag the edge.
I know one course that rigged up a foamer.

A can of shaving cream can be used as a "poor man's" foamer.

Long time ago I used a rope with knots in it and would center each pass on a knot and it was simple and worked well.

We spray hawk at least once a week. The turf pigments are very hard to see. I have been putting close to 30 oz of foursome per acre and in the morning sunset it can't be seen. Are there small foamer kits that would attach to the bars on the sprayhawk and only last a few greens?

I'm curious about the use of the Sprayhawk and I'm wondering if you pull a topdresser over your greens or if you drive a cart on your greens to brush in topdressing or if you use some other, gentler methods?

Interesting topic. We use 8oz/acre of Envy and never have the fake, painted look and by the time a week goes by, there is enough difference bt the old and new pigment.

And for what its worth, we do not pull a topdresser over greens Oct-April and never run a cart on greens. Salscos with brushes, going on 6 years.

So, do you topdresser with Lesco spreaders?

Yes sir. Green, Kiln dried sand out of Lesco spreaders wide open. One or 2 directions depending on growth. Our sand it delivered in 1 ton totes and we put 5-6 in our Dakota 440 to load spreaders.

Yeah, thats a nice way to do it. I topdressed with Lesco spreaders one winter, but it turned out to be too labor intensive for this place.

Anyway, the reason for my question is that I once saw an operation at a high end club where they pulled a topdresser over the green, drug it in with a club car and then sprayhawked it. I couldnt wrap my head around the reason for the sprayhawk when they had just driven a mechanized army over them.

    Regards,

    Steve

Will the shaving cream burn the turf? How long until it disappears? How did you attach it to the boom and trigger it?

Using a spray indicator that easily washes off, for example Blazon, will help insure uniform applications. You will not only see skips and overlaps, but a rough you will have a rough assessment of spray uniformity. Here is a video of a knockout trial illustrating the benefits of a spray indicator.
