We spray Tupersan a lot around here trying to control the Bermuda encroachment onto the Bent grass. I have noticed much more damage being done when the chemical was sprayed in August as opposed to other times. I asked a college professor about this and he stated: At that time in your area Bermuda is in its "nutrient loading stage" and it is a time when it is susceptible to those kind of inputs. Just an observation!

I believe it says that fall applications are better than spring on the label. When we used to do it in Atlanta, we would notice the same thing. Two apps, two weeks apart. Works wonders.

Also was told by a rep in that area back in the day that Tupersan acts as a pre-emergent agains poa, but not bentgrass. Never had a chance to test that theory, but still curious if it is true. If it is, that would be a good program to get on.

Spot sprayed Dallisgrass with Roundup to kill it. Then sprayed the spots with Tuppersan to prevent the old Dallisgrass from re-seeding. Overseeded theses spots with rye and the problem was taken care of. I have seen many try to get rid of the Dallisgrass but not put the pre-emerg down and the next season the bad stuff is back in the same spot.

Does it kill bermuda or just keep the stolons from rooting down? Never had much use for Tupersan as a pre-emerge product and it is very expensive. Currently we are trying everything known to man to selectively remove bermuda from bent fairways in the mid-atlantic. Alot of work with the new Pylex product. Just wondering if we should include Tupersan in some of this work. Kenneth Ingram, UMD

Kenneth, the University of Missouri did some trials with Pylex and it worked great for them, they tried 3 different start dates for 3 different trails. The early one showed complete kill, the second one that was being done at the time of field day was showing the bermuda going out, the third they had not started yet. It seems they didn't need to add Tupersan that I'm aware of. Unless you are thinking about comparing the Tupersan to Pylex, that might be interesting. If you want to compare notes, you might contact Xi Xiong, her Masters student was doing the research plot. Mel

Dr. McKelroy at Auburn researched Tupersan a good bit. He said it is a very unpredictable product. Sometimes it will give you great control and sometimes it hardly dings the Bermuda. His recommendation, based on his research, is to spray it in the fall the day after your first night in the 40's. Then, make a second app 10-14 days later. He said you might get anywhere from very little control to almost total control. If any tries to start greening up in the spring, hit it twice again 10-14 days apart. He said to not give up, that with these guidelines it will give you good control at some point. They tried different timings and this timing gave you the best chance. I started using it and the second Fall it smoked it. Had almost total control with very little control prior. It's not great, but it's about the only choice we have this far South that won't injure the bent. People have tried Acclaim Extra with mixed results. Most of the time resulting in unacceptable damage to the bent.
