I was contacted by a rexruiter today about an industry position on the West Coast. I was referred to him by a company in Las Vegas with whom I had a previous relationship. I had no interest in the position but he did share some information with me that was interesting. He said clients he works with don't openly practice age discrimination but they do tell him not to submit a client that graduated from college prior to 1990. He told me that in today's economy it is almost impossible to place a candidate that is over 50. He encourages displaced workers in their 50's to seek some type of self-employment opportunity because it is unlikely that they will secure a position that meets their needs. This is not earth shattering news but I found it interesting that a recruiter would share that with me.

Kerry, it is pretty sad that people get overlooked purely due to age. With many working to 70+ some very good long term candidates are getting ignored without even a chance of selling themselves to potential employers. I wish it weren't true but you got first hand exposure.

Yeah, they take away your boot straps when you turn 51 and want to take away your social security and medicare completely. If you cannot sell flowers in traffic the kids of the future would rather watch you bake in the sun than manage their own finances, at least that is what some folks think.
