We have a 2013 Toro 1250 sprayer that consistantly locks into the reverse gear. I have been using a screwdriver to jam it out of reverse. This entails pushing the lever back until it is unjammed. I am sure there is a better way. Is this a problem for any other Toro users. Of course the warrenty is up as well and having a tech form Toro come to our place in Germany is not cost effective. Thanks in advance.

    Dusty,

Does it lock-up in any other gear or just reverse? What happened to the Hardi spray rig that used to be there?

My techs had to cut something out of the way that was making it lock up....another reason why I was glad to get rid of my 1250's.

sounds like adjusting the shift cables might help. The service manual is available online from your toro distributor (free download). The procedure is on page 7.8.

Just thinking, cable might be broken. Unhook one end and see if you can pull it out. You shouldn't be able too. Shifter has two cables one for reverse and first gear and the other for second and third gear.

The Hardy is just for watering trees now Frank. The cables are fine. THe machine only locks into REV. But, it locks when trying to change gears not while in reverse. ie Going from tranport in 3rd gear to spray mode in first gear then the shifter will not move and the vehicle is in reverse. Thanks for your suggestions all. What was cut to stop this from happening?

Happens to me if the machine stalls and you are in gear or if you turn it off in gear, then whatever gear you are in, it is jammed. Pulled the cowling off lots of times to unjam it, still have not figured out a real good quick way to do it though. Now I just keep the boot around the shifter loose so i can lift it up and unjam it with a screwdriver or pry bar, still a pain but a great machine when working right.

Michael that is exactly what we are doing. The screwdriver is keep in the plastic area for the operators manual at all times. The cover is loose at all times. I am just worried about causing more damage over time. I am surprised that I am not alone on this. Being in Germany we have no local Toro guy.

Someone mentioned adjusting the cables, and we had that issue before and made adjustments there and we either replaced some parts on the shifter or the entire thing but ours ended up working well with no problems. Close inspection from the front to the rear of all components involved need to be looked at as the movement of the shift is being done.

    Regards,

I agree with Henry if it is happening with any frequency you have a problem with a cable or a linkage mechanism.

If you take the cab off and look at the shifting mechanism .There is a through bolt holding it all together . It will loosen off when the staff try to shift before putting key on and stepping on brake . I removed the nut and replaced it with a nylock nut solving lots of issues.I'll also check it at least once a year .Might be worth the look .Also for cacle adjustment , find neutral ..take pin out of shifting cable at rear ( 2 cables )one at a time .it should line up with the hole with out being off set either way...adjust as needed . Check both cables .

Every equipment manufacturer makes "dogs" and the 1250 is a dog. Replace that when you can with a real sprayer.

Check the engine idle speed, if the clutch doesn't fully disengage, the shift mechanism can jam. The operator should be able to hear the clutch "click" before selecting a gear.

We are taking the canopy off today to check everything suggested here. Thanks very much and I will post the results of what we find.

The 1250 is a problem child. It just is what it is. How many golf courses are completely flat and allow for this dog to makes its way around the course? The answer is NONE! You need an actual real machine to get around the course. We never had a problem with this in the old days. Even a 1962 Toro Workmaster with an FMC Sprayer could go everywhere!

I have had one of these machines for 12 years now and while it has not been problem free completely it has not been a pain in the arse at all. We use ours a lot to spray everything on the course except roundup.

I have not experienced the locking up as of yet.
