pretty much getting one of these and was wondering which head you prefer the most the 10 tine (2 rows by 5 tines) or the 6 tine head. it looks like the 10 is pretty much set at 72 holes per square foot where the 6 is adjustable. what are your thoughts?

    Awesome machine.

We got tens, fours, and the needle tine holders with ours about 12 years ago.

The needle tines broke too easily if we tried to start and stop on the clay collars so they are collecting dust. We like to get into the collars to help with LDS.

We used the tens with 1/4 inch solids for a few years. Made quick work of the monthly venting, about 5.5 to 6 hours to do 20 greens. We could not go very deep though as the tighter spacing would try to lift the sod, even with the turf guards.

After several years we needed to increase depth to get through a compacted layer just below tine depth, on sand greens, so we have since been using the 4 tine set up and going full depth. The drawback is due to the slower ground speed for spacing, it takes about 8 hours to do all greens. We now do the front 9 and practice greens the first day and the back 9 the second.

Now that we have been deep tining the last 3 Aprils, busting through the compacted layer and helping grow deeper roots, we are considering going back to the tens to help with staying ahead of play.

Chris, thanks for the response. that is excellent information that is very useful. I still have a 48" soil reliever so deep tining will not be an issue. I can understand the turf lifting with the 10's and was thinking I could always just run the front five on it and go at that if needed.

Chris how many acres of greens do you have? Trying to get a feel for the speed of the 648. We have the old Toro aerator before the 648, and we average 1/2 hour per green during core aerification.

We do deep tining / venting with a vertidrain, which we share among 3 courses. I'm wondering if we could get the 648 for core aeration and venting, using the deep tine one month, the 648 the next month.

Question for all. How often do you all vent? We currently shoot for once a month in May, June, July, and August, September is a maybe depending on golf schedules and when we do our fall core aeration.

    Thanks!

3 acres as the sprayer goes, but probably closer to 2.5a actual greens surface without having the actual number handy. We have some pretty long hikes between some greens. 1.5 miles from one green on the NE corner to another green on the SW corner.

We do the 1/4 solid monthly May, J, J, and Aug. Sometimes an April and/or Sept. depending on need.

    Core in Oct.

1/2" deep tine in Late March or first week of April. We had a definite hard pan layer about 4 inches deep on our USGA greens. This was confirmed using a compaction meter. Roots to the hard pan and slow water perc. I have a picture on the Bear Slide Golf Club Grounds Maintenance facebook page taken a couple of years ago showing the roots hanging out of the bottom of a practice green plug where they grew to the bottom of the deep tine channel but not through the hard pan layer.

We bought our 648 in 2011 and use 10,4 hole heads. The 10 hole mainly for needle tines the 4 hole
for pulling cores. we have used 10 hole a few times to pull small cores. We can do all 18 + 2 putting greens
in a day easy. We just punched the greens with .20" solid tines last week (10 hole heads).

We have 3 of them and have the 10 and 4 set up, never have used the 10 but we load it up for 5 tines on each holder, staggered,. We are in the northeast, poa. Everything from needle tines to 5/8 hollow, depending on what the super wants to do.

We use just the 6 head option, can get incredibly close spacing, 1.5" by 1.3" if I remember correctly or 3" by 2.6" if you go every other and faster ground speed. Run with the 5/16' needle tine twice per summer and Air2G2 twice as well. Fall use the 6 head option on the 648 and put 5/8" ID hollows in, removes A LOT of material, close to 14% surface which then allows us to just do a deep solid tine in the spring with the Weidenmann for a faster heal time instead of a double core spring and fall.

    Happy punching!
