I sprigged zoysia into a nursery in 1999. We haven't done anything to it, other than mow it with a rotary at 2.25" since then. I'm looking at putting it onto a driving range target green and eventually mowing it at .450". I'm in Ann Arbor, MI. I know what it looks like in and out of dormancy and think it'd look pretty cool out on the range. Any suggestions for harvesting, lowering HOC internals, etc. I'm a cool-season guy, not warm. So, any help would be great.

You will need to aerify it very intensivly asap and when it breaks dormancy in spring. It is very dense and thatchy turf. At the height you have it it will be very difficult to lower (a little at a time) it to .450, a more likely hoc would be .750. Especially if it is an old variety like meyers. You may wish to just start over and find some new sod from a newer variety that is mowed lower to start with.

Do you know what variety it is? My experience with zoysia is somewhat limited but I've seen it scalped from 1.5" to .5" with not problmes other than a prolonged greenup.

We have meyers zoysia for fairways, tees, and surrounds. Cut it just as you would normal sod, but I do recommend that you start lowering HOC as soon as it starts to warm, and topdress it alot because you will probably scalp it going down to that height. We have a hard time mowing ours any lower than .560. Depending on your location, be ready to fight large patch in the early summer.
