A couple years ago an Assistant Superintendent at the course I am now working at was given the responsibility of constructing a new nursery green. From what I've been told, rather than doing any research on the subject this individual just decided to use 1 1/2 feet of bunker sand and then seeded the area. The problem I am having now is that you are unable to pull plugs from the green because they just fall apart as soon as they are removed from the ground no matter the apparatus used. I am looking for any ideas on how to fix this problem without having to dig up the green and start from scratch?

If your not needing to pull from it for a few months, try weekly apps of ammonia nitrate 34-0-0 at .15 to.20 lbs/m for a couple months to push a thatch issue. Due to budget cuts and other restraints was forced to maintain 19 greens with nothing but 2 apps of 18-9-18 @4 lbs/m for a year so had to supplement with the ammonia and saw a rapid increase of thatch over a 4 month period.
    Best of luck

Have you tried watering the green before pulling plugs?

You could core aerifye with 1" tines and topdress with sand/peat mixture and work it in.
