We are planning a greens renovation with bent grass T1 and the greens surrounds are bermuda grass. I am thinking about having a collar of Zoysia grass to prevent the bermuda encroachment. Any comments/ Thoughts??

    Thanks in advance

Didn't work well in our situation. Zoysia couldn't tolerate the traffic of maintaining the Bent when it went dormant. Didn't last much past the first winter. We switched to Bermudagrass heavily overseeded with rye in the collars. Then used Prograss and Acclaim to keep the Bermuda out of the Bent and the Bent out of the Bermuda. Just enough to stunt the Bermuda, still like to have something under the Rye for July -September. They are essentially Rye collars for about 9 months and then a mixture for the other 3.

I second Keith's post. I am not sure about the newer varieties ability to handle it, but with Meyer in the 90's we had difficulty maintaining the zoysia and bent side by side. I would definitively like to hear other's opinions, especially with the newer varieties because we struggle with our collars. We currently have Penncross/419/Perennial Rye battling it out. They usually look ok, but are inconsistent and it would be nice to have a uniform transition between the 419 fairways and bent greens.

We have T1 Bent and Zoro zoysia collars no issues at all other than some Bermuda contamination but we spray Acclaim/fusilade or spread Tupersan and it does a good job. I will say this though like someone else mentioned your collars go dormant and still have to maintain the bent through the winter so we use turning boards and that has saved our collars.

I have battled this problem from day one, 10 + years ago. Penncross greens and Myers Zoysia. In Southwest Missouri.

I used to attribute the problems to the traffic, and I still think that plays a big part of it.

I also think irrigation plays a part in it, since the bentgrass needs more water then the zoysia.

Recently I have been also prescribing to the theory of PGR's mainly Primo, which is what I've sprayed for years, just started spraying some Trimmit apps also. The boom hangs over the edge of the green catching the zoysia collar. I have heard guys who have cut out growth regulators seeing improvements in their warm season collars (both zoysia and Bermuda).

I hate it, we have been starting to overseed bentgrass into the collars and so far it's ok, we do have some ryegrass we seeded a couple of springs ago, didn't do anything in the spring because of preemergent applications, but it was what I was asked to do. Come that fall, the ryegrass popped.

    Good Luck.

Mel brings up a good point with PGR's. We strive to not spray the collars whenever PGR's are in the tank. Has made a huge difference no matter the turf. Have not seen any adverse affect on edge of greens from missed applications...disease, regulation, or fertility.
