I have a range tee that gets the snot kicked out of it in the fall from school golfers. I have in the past been over-seeding low mow blue into my tee, which was originally bent.

My question is, can I put rye(annual or perennial) at a low rate in with the mix and hope the low mow blue establishes? Has anyone done this before, in the northern climate of Illinois?

    Doug,
We have a heavily used short-cut blue practice tee. We over seed with a 50-50 mix of blue rye and it works awesome. The rye pops fast and provides a good cover for the slow germinating blue. We also fertilize heavily to push the short-cut blue. The very aggressive blue eventually takes over the rye, but the way we have been doing it has worked very well. We mow our practice tee at .400 here in southern New Hampshire.
