Does anyone have any experience and/or comments about Gly-Rye from Jacklin seed?

I am thinking about converting my zoysia (plus poa and clumpy rye) collars to all rye, and was wondering about this seed. I hear it is a good looking grass, I can spray Round-up over it to get rid of poa, but it does have to be sprayed every year with Round up or it will lose it's tolerance to Poa.

Any other good rye grasses? I was thinking about trying to get bent established, but in the cool of the spring, I didn't think I could get a good catch of seed.

If I could figure out how to post pictures of my situation I would.

    Thanks!

Don't know about the seed question...

to post a pick, go to the reply screen, scroll down to 'upload attachment' and hit choose file. (you may have to find the picture on your computer and drag it to Documents or Desktop and name it so you can find it). Then all you have to do is find the file on your computer, select it, and hit 'add the file'.

Stan Zontek recommended we convert our Zoysia/Bermuda collars to Rye years ago. It has been fantastic. To keep poa out, we have treated with Prograss and Velocity. To keep the Bermuda from encroaching on Bent and Goosegrass at bay have treated with Acclaim (and now could use Pylex if needed). The Rye is only a 9-10 month grass so we like to see a little Bermuda in collar to fill in in July and August when the Rye takes it on the chin. We do schedule a couple extra specific sprays for Pythium and Gray Leaf Spot in addition to what they get from regular green spray, but at about 1/2 acre or less cost is insignificant although fitting it into a tight golf schedule isn't always easy. It also gives us a buffer for growth regulator damage on Bermuda from greens spray and looks soooo much better in winter. My $.02

Hi Mel - I don't know anything about that particular ryegrass. It is not in the NTEP trial here at UMD. Bent collars really struggle with mechanical damage. One club in our area converted to rye collars. I struggle with posting pictures also, but I attached a word document with the picture. Approaches are bent, but the collar around the green is rye. You can see the stress on the bent while the rye looks great. Good luck. Ken

Thanks for the info about the recommendation of switching in your area.

I attached a document with a couple of ours, one we had replaced the sod about a year and a half ago when we redid the bunker, the other is from when the sod was originally installed 9 years ago. We will redo the bunker this spring and will sod if we don't get to switch. Both pictures taken in January and look worse now.

    Sorry Keith,

I need to thank you for passing along this information. You don't happen to know if Stan wrote an article about this recommendation do you?

    Thanks again!

Thanks Josh, I tried all of those methods and it tells me my file is invalid or something like that.

I don't recall seeing it in writing, may be in one of our ancient USGA Advisory visits. I'll see if I can track it down (m ay take a while)

Mel we also had a club in our area experiment with those robotic greens mowers. Really wiped out the bentgrass collars. The club spent a lot of money to change collars to Zoysia. They bagged both programs and are switching to ryegrass collars. Kenneth Ingram, UMD

Thanks again Keith and Ken, much appreciated for the information.

I did try to look for articles in the Green Section Record archives file, but probably due to my lack of computer skills, I couldn't find any. Wonder if anyone else finds their search engine difficult?
