Looking for any feedback with regards to anyone who has had experience with both Rainbird and Toro centrals and controllers. Looking to make an upgrade to our current system from Toro VT2. I have had a lot of past experience with Toro Osmac and site pro but not as much with Rainbird. Both system seem to be same with a few differences but looking to get your opinions on them.

I've run both and like you I upgraded from VT2 to OSMAC w/ Sitepro. I'm getting ready to put in an entirely new system and we will be using Toro decoders and heads. For me, it's strictly an issue of service, they both throw water. Buy the system that has the best support in your area, for us that's Toro.

    Regards,

    Steve

We just completed a full install of Rainbird's IC system. Extremely pleased with the service, heads and controls. Irrigation is all Rainbird does. All their R&D goes into their products and have been doing it successfully for over 100 years.

    Hey Kevin,

I too am in the planning stages of a new system and am torn between the two (Toro Decoder & Rain Bird IC). From a nuts & bolts perspective - I'm Rain Bird all the way. But from a service & support standpoint - its Toro hands down. So for now I'm still on the fence. Hope all is well!

Not the my two cents is worth much but you should also consider the system in the ground. If you are upgrading your heads as well it might be worth noting that I have toro DT50 in the ground. Anywhere I have metal pipes crossing the creek that runs through our property, I have to constantly unclog because of rust issues. To my knowledge I don't think Rainbird has those issues. Just another piece of info to chew on.

When is the last time Rainbird switched a model number? The housings for the rotors have stayed virtually unchanged for as long as I can remember. Toro seems to come out with a "new and improved" alternative yearly. Not bad year to year, but 10 years into a 30 year system, are you going to find what you are looking for anymore? That's a thought I ask myself a lot.

Nine years into a new Rainbird system with 51dr heads and they no longer service these heads.

30 years into a Toro system and I can still get parts and new rotors that fit in the old bodies.

We had 51DR heads installed with our new system in 1993 or 96, with SBM electrical/mechanical clocks, I don't know why when in the same time frame there were gear driven heads and circuit board controllers. Always thought because it was a municipal job the contractor that bid, picked up the obsolete stuff at a good price. Thing is the stuff still works. We use Sport turf irrigation for 51 parts we can't get from Rain Bird and Board Tronics for clock repairs. We are installing newer up to date Par+ units, and what I like about Rain Bird is everything will work with our Status II computer program.

Of course this was 20 years ago, but I remember Toro VT4's with the old computers installed in the early 90's at 3 our county courses in New Jersey, by the time the last was installed we had to go to Network 8000.

I prefer Rain Bird, but pick who gives you the best service.
