Does anybody out there have a good attendance policy they would like to share? We are in the process of getting a new handbook out to our employees and would like to stop the "no show, no call" activity. Thanks in advance.

2 'No Call, No Shows in 1 year = Termination. The rest of our attendance policy is 6 lates or 6 call ins in one year (verbal warning) = no merit raise no Bonus, 9 = written notice (progressive discipline) 12 = termination. In general our attendance policy is too lenient for seasonal staff. A employee could have 11 call-ins and 11 lates and still have his job, but we have over 900 employees in lots of different types of jobs so there is no "one size fits all" policy.

    Larry,

Written policies work at some places and may help you but the one thing to keep in mind is once it is in writing, it is considered a implied contract so you need to follow it by the letter for all employees or be subject to complaints or lawsuits. On the other hand if there is no policy it can be tough to fire someone depending on your states laws and if you offer a at will .

Wisconsin as many states is a at will state. You work at our will and we can fire you at any time for any reason as long as it is not for discriminatory or arbitrary. If we had a written policy we would could lose that ability in some cases.

We do not spell out an attendance policy but have been very lucky where the full time staff and the retirees are rarely late and never no show. With the seasonal students the first couple late times are forgiven as everyone has a bad day or hits a train but if a pattern continues we warn the employee and then let them go. It is the main reason we fire students but even then it is only 1 every other year. We have good kids in the middle of Wisconsin and we clearly tell them what we expect when they are hired.

No call no show is huge. You can't have that. But multiple illnesses and health issues happen. You can go years without a problem then have all kinds of problems. We always covered them. I can go mow greens or change cups, whatever. We'll cover each other. We can do that and we will do it for you if we have to.

No calls/no shows are not tolerated here. If that happens you are immediately written up and the next violation to any policy then is suspension without pay. If the no call/no show occurs on a weekend then it is automatically a suspension without pay unless proper documentation can be provide showing a reason for a no call/no show. Prior to my taking over as Superintendent this happened all the time. Many days they'd not have full staff as guys would just not show up. That had to be nipped in the butt immediately.

Or you could nip it in the bud. that works too

Back in the old days we would just wrap a chain around their ankles and drag them behind the Cushman Truckster bouncing them off trees. If they survived it worked pretty well.
