Just curious out there about the plant health of cool season turf that doesn't go dormant. I am a superintendent at a course in south west Washington with wall to wall cool season turf that never goes dormant. I came to this course from the Midwest where our turf has a nice dormancy in the winter months. My question is on plant health. If cool season turf never is able to go in to dormancy, is it a healthier plant or does the dormancy allow the plant time to shut down and become hardier and less susceptible to summer stresses and diseases. I have bent/poa greens and blue/rye fairways. Has there been any studies on this? If so where could I find them.

This fall here in Southern Indiana, the temperatures during the months of November and December were way above normal. This allowed my cool season roughs to tiller more and grow denser root mass. I would think that cool season grasses that don't go dormant would be healthier in the spring than mine that go dormant in December. Thicker shoots and longer roots is what I always thrive for. Seems practical.
