I am sad to report the passing of Dr. A.J.Powell, Jr. today. He is the Father of Turfgrass in America. I am glad and honored to call him my friend, my pal and a most loyal fan of Kentucky basketball and Kentucky sports. He will be missed by all and he has touched so many lives personally as well as professionally. The details of his "celebration of life" are pending-I just wanted you to know that I am deeply saddened of his loss........our loss today of this great Christian.

May God Bless You A.J.-my respect for you and what you did with your life will remain by my side forever.

I too remember Dr Powell. I spent 4 years building and rebuilding golf courses in the Paducah and Louisville area and A.J. always treated me as if we had known each other a lifetime. I gained a tremendous amount of respect for this humble man. Even though he knew the answers he always made me feel like I was the one that came up with it. I will never forget his many references to his beloved "Henry County"
    Thank you for the post.
My son is a golf course superintenden in Bowling Green KY and serves on the KTC. He called and informed me of AJ's passing. I have thought about it ever since.
He was absolutely the best person I knew.

My favorite KY joke of his was the guy rounding the curb only to have a lady, head-on in his lane, with her head out the window calling him a PIGGGG. He turns around to holler back at her, only to turn back around in time to hit the biggest pig he had ever seen in his life. Something like that, only AJ could tell it. Kenneth Ingram, UMD

My goodness we have lost some great turf people (and just great people) in 2013. A.J. was absolutely one of my all time favorites.
