    Spin or relief grinning, thoughts,
For the last 25+ years I have spun grind all reels and this year I sent my Mechanics to a RED Machine training seminar and they were told that this is now wrong and we should be relief grinning. I would like some thoughts on this before I recommend a new grinder as mine will not do relief grind.

    thanks

I will just throw it out there, the SIP Grinder is the best grinder. We use every sort of reel unit including pull-gangs and they are all constantly sharp. The mechanic checks them every time before they go out and adjusts contact and rollers. Everything works perfectly all the time. We relief grind the ones that request it and just spin the ones that don't. I have never had such a nice mower set-up situation in 30 years. The SIP guys will set you up. When you look at price, features and benefits, this is a no-brainer.

Grinding is like politics or religion, lots of opinions. If 25-30 years are working for you, you have a lot of experience on your side. I spin and relief my heavy reels (fwy and T) but regularly spin only greens. You are going to get lots of opinions, do what works for you but when time permits try an experiment, we always learn something new daily.

Like, Mike, I spin the smaller blade cutting units, and relief the larger ones. At one point I relief ground everything, and know guys that do, but I have changed the way I do it. Large ones yes to the relief, and smaller reels, 11 & 14 just spin. We still run zero to very light contact and cut a single piece of paper, and the minute we double it we schedule a grind. I don't think there is a right or wrong way of setting reels, it really is what works best for your situation.

    Keith,

Having been a mechanic for the first 10 years of my turf career, I'm of the opinion that it doesn't do a whole lot... either for quality of cut, or bedknife life. We used the old manual Foley grinder when I started... where you numbered each blade and ground the relief one at a time... we mixed and matched cutting units that had both and we couldn't see a noticeable difference. I don't know how much price difference there is in the new grinders and what the labor would be... but I don't think you'll gain anything.

    My two cents...
