Boy did I just get a shock when I read an article about a former parochial school and 2 years of college classmate of mine. A former San Diego mayor and a girl I grew up with has been indicted for money laundering and gambled away a billion dollars over the past 10 years! Maureen O'Conner appears to be stuck in deep manure. She was one of the so called movers and shakers 25 to 30 years ago in the San Diego area. She married the guy that started Foodmaker, specifically Jack in the Box. Maureen and her identical twin were classmates of mine forever. I guess she went bad because years ago I shunned her in favor of other girlfriends! She was on the San Diego Port Commission for several years after her four year run as mayor. Obviously, all good things must end. A billion dollars? At what point wouldn't it dawn on you that you probably need help?

How in the world could she even get her hands on a billions dollars? Or how did she get that much credit at the tables? I would have thought someone would have seen that coming sooner then that. Heck in Bentonville, they know what I'm buying at my local Walmart every two weeks.

Let me update this. She took 2 million from her and her late husbands foundation to either gamble more or pay off current gambling debts. The article says she won nearly a billion dollars gambling but lost even more! Obviously the late husband was worth even more than I realized. This girl came from a poor family of 12 Catholic kids. The parents took any charity they could get to dress the kids. Obviously, she didn't learn to be frugal from her parents! At 66 years old, she now faces prison time unless she somehow gets off on the addiction thing because after all, she is a victim!

    Hey Sandy,

Did she lose it all at Barona? I know there's a casino called Barona somewhere down near you.

You know she will get off Sandy. Obama will probably pardon her and make all of the working class pay out the debt.

Pete, she was a regular from what I just heard. I am guessing she was a regular at several tribal gaming facilities to blow that kind of money. Of course Obama will pardon her. She is a true blue democrat who was once urged to run for governor of our state. A woman, democrat, victim! I am guessing the rest of us would spend years in prison and she will probably do rehab instead. I should feel more sad than shocked. Barona just lost a large contributor to my pay check.

Well the latest this afternoon is that Maureen had been in ill health for the past several years including a brain tumor. The brain tumor made her do it will probably be the defense. Like most gamblers that can't quit, she is now broke. just like when she was growing up. Maybe I should feel sorry for her now that I have learned about the brain tumor. Either power and money went to her head or the tumor caused changes, I will never know but that certainly isn't the girl I remember growing up. I just remember her twin being the more outgoing of the two and I always felt the smarter of the two. Deep in my coal black heart, I actually do feel bad for her.

A billion dollars. That's amazing. Just once I'd like to split aces at a million a hand. She probably split sixes at 50 million a hand.

I hit once with an Ace and an eight....(honestly I only counted 9) the dealer gave me a two and moved on....everyone else at the table got up and left. Glad it was only a $2.50 table, otherwise I probably would have had the crap beat out of me.

"I guess she went bad because years ago I shunned her in favor of other girlfriends! "

Yea, that was what started her on the path to her downfall.

Rich is right. It's all your fault, Sandy. You should feel ashamed.

I should have turned her on to some other addiction when we were teenagers!

The correct play is to double down with that hand.

My second ex never gambled before and won $12,000 playing craps at the casino at The Excelsior. While she was doing that I won $2000 playing horses at the same casino. Win or lose, Las Vegas can be a lot of fun.

I don't want anyone to think I am making light of what is a serious addiction. It is real and unfortunately, working for a casino operation, I hear horror stories everyday. I have heard way too many stories of people losing their houses, wives, families and are still looking to win it back. It was just shocking that it is someone I grew up with. I can gamble and walk away. In fact, I have a hard time sitting down in the first place and risking my hard earned money but to others it is the rush of the risk that keeps them going. In Maureen's case it sounds a great deal like numbness from losing a powerful husband and to other powerful friends that were major influences on her life, namely Helen Copley, a news paper giant and Joan Croc of McDonald's fame. They basically shaped her life and along with her husband, all three died within a short period of time. Add a brain tumor to the empty feeling of loss and you have a recipe for tough times. She made personal choices but I do feel for her and her family.

Sounds like a Lifetime movie in the making. Where Maureen plays the evil twin.
