Just curious about what others do with their "long" grass down here in Florida. I "jacked" my height up to 1.5 inches from 1 and 5/16ths. The mistake I made was announcing the change in the newsletter. I have since lowered the cutting height to 1.25 inches.

    Thanks in advance

Only 2 people know where I work what the height is.......I'm still looking for them.

Seriously, It actually is a secret here for that reason. Too much information to the masses spells trouble. I tell them it's called "rough" for a reason, start mumbling in Latin and walk away.

Let's just say......I am double of yours...ya, that's the ticket.

We mow roughs at 1.5" and fairways at 5/8". I think at 1.25" I would lose the fairway definition. We try to mow roughs twice per week.

I was feeling kind and tried to involve the membership. Clearly I was wrong. The club was at one time member owned, and now it's not. The loudest person is an ex president (who some blame for the loss of ownership) that started complaining a month ago about location flag placement "the little fix your ballmarks flag". Now it has turned to this. I am replacing a guy who was there 30 years, and I changed things. What was I thinking.......?

    Thanks

I am not sure where you are in Florida, but it is tough maintaining fairway edges at that height unless you are mowing fairways 5x/wk and keeping the edges well stimulated. If you have an owner and the members are not equity, communicate with owner and walk away from the members when they complain. I once had an owner tell me, "I don't pay you to take their ****!"

I know where my check comes from. He said don't change a thing, but the person I speak of just keeps getting louder. At the end of the day this golf course has gone from looking like a park to looking like a golf course. With fewer weeds.

In that case I would change it back to 1.5" tomorrow and avoid the grill room for a while.

1.25" with common Bermuda on two of our courses, mowed once per week, with fairways at .600". 1.5" on TifSport Bermuda mowed once per week with fairways at .400". Even at 1.25", by the time we get back around this time of the year it could be 4-5" in spots. If the members had their way on our two private courses, we would mow wall-to-wall at .750" with no fairway and no rough, just all one height. Those fairways are 35-40 yards wide in spots with about 15' of Bermdua rough then into Bahia. They complain about the Bahia more than anything. Being mowed on a 7 day cycle at 2" and they still comment that it hasn't been mowed in months. Better reorder some ID10T tags, might run out at tomorrow's advisory committee meeting. This time of the year we spend more man hours mowing Bahia than all the Bermuda combined. What's wrong with this picture?

A little off the topic, but it got me thinking. "If the member's had their way......"

I'm not sure what is wrong with that picture.

It's not all the members, just some vocal few. We try to give them everything they ask for, within reason. Some of their ideas though...well, like ball washers on every tee, no bunkers, bushes for yardage posts, not aerifying, shotguns at 7:30 everyday.....you can't give them everything they want.

I've only played one facility that mowed everything at the same height, except for greens. Looked good. But, no penalty for hitting a bad shot. You could have been 20 yards from the edge of where the fairway should be, and still have a great lie. Kind of takes the skill factor out of it....

Andy, Just tell them if they get to wipe their ball clean before putting out why do we need ball washers at all?

Exactly. They are on the course so the rangers can wash the balls when they find them in the woods.

Let me see... ball washers on every tee? CHECK... No bunkers? It's been proposed... Bushes for yardage posts? We have posts... Not aerifying? CHECK (as we had to skip the 2nd)... Shotguns at 7:30 everyday? CHECK (7:00 actually!)

    Guess I've got it good!
