We are experimenting the next few days with having no tee markers on the teeing grounds. Wondering if anyone else has tried this and had some success?

How do you not define the teeing ground with markers? Aren't there some fairly specific rules of the game that have to be accounted for? Just curious.

Considered doing that in the past, but figured the front of every tee would get worn out fairly quickly

    Andrew,

I was associated with a course that does not have tee markers. The premiss is that a person is selected (flip of a coin or golf tee) to choose the teeing ground on the 1st tee. The winner of the 1st hole then selects the tee area on the 2nd hole and so on. This method worked quite well and was a blessing from a maintenance perspective.

The course has been rated by our governing golf association and markers are present to show where the posted yardages come from. My hopes are to distribute the wear, allow golfers (instead of us) determine what level of challenge they want for the day and quite obviously reduce some maintenance. For club events we will still have to have markers in place and its less of an issue because we really only have 2 events a year that require that.

Should be interesting to hear golfer feedback and I hope its something that has legs going forward.

    Andrew,

You are correct regarding distribution of wear. We found the golfers would select teeing areas away from divots. Additionally, this eliminated any comments about the golf course playing a particular yardage.

We go without tee markers in the spring and fall when we primarily have member play to speed up mowing and maintenance. With 5 sets of tees (plus two sets of junior tee) and some holes with 6 or 7 pads it would be confusing to the daily fee player, outings and leagues as to where to tee off.

This year we have not put out our back (black) set of tee markers. A few regulars use the tees but it was hard to justify mowing the markers for 8-16 rounds per week.

Not long ago golfers were bitching about 'Constant Yardage". You can't win but I like the idea of no markers .But the rules say.....

We pick up all tee markers during winter overseeding of tees. It really helps reduce on wear. We put tees back after 2 weeks.

Tee markers can be used for tournament play. Daily play, rules schmules.

Maybe, but if I were to define what we do for a living, a simple definition would be something like "we prepare the grounds for the playing of the game of golf." Don't want to be a fuddy duddy but the rules apply whether it's a tournament or not. Do we only mark OB etc for a tournament? Not putting the concept down but how is it possible to not put out tee markers and still be in compliance with the rules?

Guilty as charged. Excuse me, I have to go now, I am hearing some of that new fangled rock and roll music coming from the shop and have to shut it off.
