Club decided to start posting green speeds on a daily basis. The pro shop staff is stimping and not sure I'm fine with it. I don't think its valuable information for the avg. golfer. The speeds change daily because we don't roll on a daily basis. I think its too late to turn back now. Anyone else doing this?

You don't have enough stress apparently. ;) I don't do it, but it has been a common practice in this area since the early 80's at least. One club I visited in 1983 had members carrying stimpmeters.

A wise man once said, "it could rain gold coins and it wouldn't be enough."

    First, it'll be 11, then 12, then 13, then.....

    It's not sustainable.

    Good luck.

    Hi RootRot,

There are a couple ways to look at it. First, you are not having to do the work. GREAT. Second, if your greens are 10 or better you won't have anything to worry about. And, now you just need to have some good communication with your pro because if he is well informed by you about course conditions, then he will be able to pass that info along to the members.

I see this as a win-win for you.

    Good Luck,

    Root,

so many variables involved, type and slopes on greens, ability of the person doing readings, it becomes a competition that can lead to personal stress and hair loss (like me). I threw my stimpmeter in a lake long ago, as its intent was for consistency not competition between local courses and TV events. It is a reality that green speed is fluid with weather, temps, moisture, growth, ect. Challenging fair conditions are not based on some number. Beside if you are good with the meter it can be manipulated to come out whatever you desire.....Most players over 10 hcp can not handle truly fast greens anyway...JMO

I don't see how the continued deterioration of the integrity of the game can be a win for anyone. Why does a player need to know the stimp reading before teeing off? That's what the putting green is for. Plus, Root is going to double check the posted readings anyway, I imagine, so that five minutes the pro shop was saving him is moot. And what if the greens aren't running a 10? We don't even know where Root resides.

Pros are now handling stimp meters? I see a new design on the horizon, one that folds.

Hate to bring this up but there is an application on your smartphone called I Stimp and it is a stimpmeter application for your phone, what will they do to us next. All I need is a bunch of people slowing up play so they can stimp the green with their own digital stimpmeter. The even worst part of this is, that it is fairly accurate

Ever since I heard complaints from a foursome saying the greens were too fast and another foursome saying they were too slow, all within an hour apart I stopped stimping them. I have only been at this course for 4 years, but when I have 20 year members and local country club members telling me that the greens are the best they have ever seen them and the best in the area, I feel I am doing an ok job.

I had our treasurer ask me about the I-Stimp a couple of weeks ago and I told him I would never use it even though I have an I-Phone. The truth is it does not matter what the stimp speed is because it will not change the way I am upkeeping the greens. I have 80% of the membership that loves our green speeds, 15% that could care less and 5% that wants PGA speeds. Who am I going to please?

By stimping your greens everyday you will do nothing more then bring awareness to the fact that they tend to change a lot. This can only make your job harder. If they are going to stimp the greens I would make sure they do a minimum of three greens and averaging those three out just like you are supposed to do the stimp with three balls.

On my course the best speed is 9-9.5. Any faster is a problem. Magically, all my reporting comes in this range. I am doing a great job at keeping them so consistent.
