A strange question but due to the expense of black sand I was wondering if anyone has topdressed greens and then sprayed them with a black pond dye in order to darken the greens and attract some additional heat. I spoke to the people at Precision but they have done no testing on the toxicity to turf of their Jet Black pond dye

Do you reckon it's worth taking a chance?

Green dye for turf might work just as well?

Charcoal, but then you have to worry about any products you might have put out being neutralized.

There has been a few studies on the use of turf paint to increase soil temperature. I believe all worked, some better than others.

Sorry Dave the last video got some "two thumbs down reviews" from Roger Ebert and Dave Homme. No more videos

Look for SP Darken from Simplot Partners or Warm-Up from Crop Production Services. They are very dark colorants (almost black) that we often use to cut the neon green color of some of the turf paints on the market to give a more natural turf color.

    Hi Everyone,
Looking for a good technique to make black topdressing sand. We cannot buy it so must produce ourselves. We have black dye and our existing process is as follows:

1-Dampen dry sand and place in large, portable cement mixer
2-Inject black dye into mixer and let mix until the sand is at desired color.

The process is slow and we are looking for a faster method to make the sand black.

    Regards and appreciate any tips.

    Ken

    Ken,

I have made a fair amount of green sand with green lawnger turf paint by spraying the sand pile with a 3 gal pump sprayer and turning it over with the skid steer bucket, spraying, turning over, etc. If you don't have a bin you can dedicate to the colored sand, the parking lot would be fine. You can make a lot of sand in fairly short order. You will just need to play with the paint rate to get your desired color.

    Good luck...

We have used a local mix on site concrete truck. We load in his truck and add the dye. Doing 50+ tons of sand at one time. Have been using him for concrete cart path repairs as he can bring up to 7 yards. Since he mixes on site we only pay for what we use/need. No waste.
