    What bedknives do you use?

I have been using the tournament blades but everytime we put a new set on I cannot cut below .140" without severe scalping. I have laid down on the green and examined the bedknife/green surface and can see where this knife is pushing the grass (bunching) it from it sticking too low into the canopy. After we use them for a few weeks and lap them in the eventually get where I can lower them to .130" but never when we first install them. This is on a toro mower.

On our Toro 3150's, we use a micro cut bedknife. Part # 93-4262. Range of cut is .062"-.188". Your tournament cut bedknife for a Toro has a range of cut of .125"-.375". I have noticed that when you get to the bottom range of this, although you can still be within the specs, cut is distorted and exactly what you mentions happens. Only downside to using the micro cut is they need changing about every 2-3 weeks depending on use and sharpening.

In the past when I have tried to go lower but could not with the existing bedknives, I have used a grinder to take the hump off the bottom of the bedknife. Even if I can get a few 1/1000's of an inch, it does help.

The newer reels have a shim for when you go above 130 .The shim is inbetween the bracket that holds the rear rollar and under 130 it is on top stored so you don't lose it.Our new mower came in at 135 but I immediatly lowered to 125 without moving the spacer and had a little scalping off and on .We put the spacer in it's storage spot and the scalping went away.

Use the micro knives, OEM or JRM. Measure your reel, the lower you go the less of the reel you actually get to use. We replace our greens reels when they hit the mid 47's on the pie tape and never have a problem. I have had triplex units set at .115 and as low as .075 with no problems.
