As we approach the summer I just wanted to get some opinions on using grooved rollers vs. solid rollers for greens mowers on bentgrass greens in the south. We typically go grooved until around June then switch to solid until the tempertures fall around mid to late September. Just wanted to get a feel if everyone did about the same or had any other ways they did things.

I used to do the same on bentgrass in Atlanta. I would switch back to grooved right after fall aeration at the beginning of September.

I'm a little north of you in SW MO, but I do stay with grooved rollers all season.

We do mow at .156" all season long with a Toro 3150 triplex with DPA 11 bladed reels. We will do a clean-up pass every other or third mowing depending on weather and if we rolled instead of mowed that morning. We do roll with a Ransome G-plex II triplex with a home made set of rollers.

I do the same thing, switch to smooth rollers in mid June then back to grooved in Mid September.

Been using smooth rollers this spring w/ grow in from severe winterkill in VT. Been slowly lowering heights to achieve a happy height. What is the difference usually if your trying to cut w/ old 16lb steel grooved toro rollers and then you switch to the lightweight smooth roller. I am at .150 now with the smoothies and grass is so much higher than machine w/ steel grooved at .160.
