Wondering if there is any benefit in running pond aerators through a Canadian winter. We have two at the bottom of our irrigation pond and the pumps are relatively cheap to run.

My experience has been to keep the aerators running. They keep the water oxygenated and doesnt allow the trapped gasses from dead and decaying matter to build up under the ice because there will be unfrozen areas where the bubblers are. This will allow them to escape and constantly oxygenate the water which will help the overall ecosystem of the pond (fish, plants ,etc)

We have a total of 5 platforms with 3 airstones each mounted on them and we leave them all running throughout the winter. We stock our pond with rainbow trout and grass carp so feel it is important to keep the water well oxygenated. We also use effluent water to irrigate the golf course, so because we are unable to disperse it over the winter this also helps with the pond environment health. It does keep open water on the ponds, typically 15 feet across even when ice is 18" thick.
We do sometimes have one of the airlines freeze up over the winter on the shorline but seem to have overcome this by making sure that they run downhill and never flatten out so the condensation freezes in one particular spot.
