Went back in the archives and found quite a few Primo questions but none answered the following I have thought of.

First - when spraying Primo on fairways in general and bermuda in the transition zone, I hear the turf quality is so much better but will it help with low nitrogen applications? We currently have put down less the two pounds of nitrogen the past 4 or 5 years since we converted. The first two seasons was the only time we went over 2 pounds and was somewhere near 3 or slightly above. I guess my question is, should I use my money for Primo or fertilizer?

The second one is more for greens, I do know there are some in my area that do not use Primo on greens and some that do, after learning about the 200 GDD issues, and having to apply sometimes at 6 days even with the heat, what then is the real advantage to primo or not?

    Thanks!

While I'm not located in the transition zone, I have utilized the 200gdd model for Primo on greens. I feel the benefit of Primo is rapid uptake and safety. Rapid uptake for me comes back to us being control freaks, we want to know when it's going into effect, that said I'm moving away from Primo next year and going with Cutless and possibly Legacy during the summer if it gets really hot. I have no fear that Primo is going to damage the plant even at high rates from an overlap, I have concerns with the systemic pgr's out there that if there is an overlap we could really smoke some poa.

Mel, I have great success with Primo on Bermuda Fairways in the Transition zone with low N inputs (similarily with 2 #'s or less). Although we don't apply enough Primo to reduce our mowing frequency, it does make clippings more manageable, and improves density and drought tolerance. Generics make it easier to afford. I look at it as making all my inputs more effective.
If you are managing mostly bent greens, Cutless and Trimmit have longer application windows that may work better for your spray schedule? and as great partners with Primo during the extreme heat stress periods. It all depends on the cost to apply at such close intervals v. the cost of other materials at longer intervals as well as the availability of labor.

We apply Primo at 11oz/A every three weeks on 419 bermuda in the summer. We generally only put out 1.25lb N/1000ft via Agrium BCMU. Fairways look great and got even better with Primo. Reduced mowing frequency from 3 to 2 times per week. This is outside Atlanta, GA.
